View Full Version : E46 Coupe Door Seals ought to get lifetime warranty

My 328Ci is in the final year of its' 4/50 (although there are
only 17,000 mi on the odo), and I will now be on my 3rd
set of door seals...:tsk:
Fortunately, it's not too big of a hassle for me to get them R&R'd,
but what's going to happen the next time???
There should be a lifetime warranty addendum for this known
defect I.M.H.O.
It is absolutely inevitable that they will have to replaced
again, like clockwork, in a year and a half. I am going to
get really pissed when I have to pay for the next replacement!

I can't even count the number of cars I've seen walking the local dealerships with this same problem.... :tsk:
Those aren't really expensive to fix are they? I'd be :madrazz: too....
i agree jon. these should be lifetime warranty. the part that comes loose on my car is the part thats near the door latch. they uses to bulge out in warm weather and then rubs against the door making it hard to close. for a long while, the task of closing the door included a push on the door seal so that door would close effortlessly. not doing so would tear the door seals. but that got really aggrivating. i brought it in and complained about it the door not closing easily and told them that the door seal bulges out and all they did was push it back in and said it was fixed. :tsk:  so i just stop pushing it back in and let the door rip it in time so that they would replace it. :tsk:  after 3 door seals and about 8 or so trip they permanently glue it in! it's working so far and hasn't been a problem but should it need to be removed for whatever reason, i may end up having to fork out 600 smackers to replace it.  grrr! yes, doeboy, these seals are expensive.
My passanger seals are falling off too.
Luckly, they stay agains the door if I reset them there. I need to make an appointment. Only 3500 miles left on factory warranty :tsk:

Just over the 1 year mark with my 2002 325Ci and no problems YET.
Has BMW changed the design of the seals ?

You know they'll just glue that back right? And I can't believe the techs at Cutter doesn't cut you any slack Jon. :dunno:
I've looked into the TIS (my passenger side is torn too...At Vegas Speedway it was flapping around) and it specifically said if it's not completely torn to just glue it back. The glue appearantly does not survive extreme heat (like 100+ degree for an extended period of time). I'm going to order a tube of the BMW weatherseal glue and just glue the sucker back when it falls off again because it will. :dunno:
In fact, I think that part in your picture IS glued on, not a seperate piece.

They just gave me my keys back, and for now I am
again a happy camper.
(new seals on both doors)
Until next year.......

Why is it so difficult?
The glue from this $5 device survives much more than 100 degrees. :dunno:

What am I missing here? :dunno: I have a coupe with perfectly good door seals on a 2 year old car with 30k miles. Its a July build, 01. Did they change the type of material they use on them? I do keep the seals in shape with rubber/vinyl dressing...would that be the difference or maybe its heat related (I noted that Jon lives in S.CAl.)

i live north of you and i'm on my 3rd seal. i think it's temp related. it's not about protecting it. the problem is that the door seal somehow touches the edge of the door and whenever you close it, it pulls the door seal away from the door frame. after a while the door seal starts tearing. you can notice this if the door takes a bit more effort to close. also if the door seal is at all brushing the door edge. you could have a problem later.

83 11 0 009 712 Adhesive remover: 1X
81 22 9 407 524 Weatherseal Adhesive: 1X
If the outer surface isn't damaged, all you need to do is remove the residual adhesive and GLUE it back on. The fix should last indefinitely.
Isn't it the black mousefur part that falls off? Unless you use rubber protectant on the mousefur, I don't think it matters what you do to the protectant-able part.

D'OH! Didn't see the attachment...thks!
Okay, I was thinking we were discussing the rubber trim...going to the garage to check mine now!
IIRC there is an issue with the rubber part, too but it's from them tearing near the door latch (and there was a SI bulletin on this, I think). This is different.

Everything seems fine, I just checked. (whew) I was curious as Friday is my last service as I'm fast approaching 36,000 miles (33,500 now) and I want to take care of anything left that may fail soon.
my 2000 323ci has also had door seal problems. it is in the shop today getting them replaced. they came unglued. apparantly, this is a big problem for when i brought in the car and told my service advisor, she replied, "not another one!"

Yea, that's how I found out that the passanger side was loose.
Just had that side glued down, and now the driver's seal is coming apart

Mine was 3.5 years old and 45K miles until any problems appear, and I live in a hot climate...

See my post further up the page. It's the same adhesive BMW tech uses to work on your torn seal anyway. Supposedly from the factory they have this adhesive on a TAPE that you apply, remove the tape and glue the "mouse fur" part (thanks Kaz) onto the trim.
It lasts for about two years under So. Cal climate. Nothing you can do until BMW completely re-designs this part. :thumbdwn:

This is different. This is funny because 9 months ago (9 months after picking up my 2002 325ci), I had the "hanging" seals on both sides like Jon was complaining about--they replaced both seals. Monday I'm taking it back in because of the tearing of the rubber part that Kaz is talking about. Now it looks like this will be a yearly recurring problem. Dang, that just blows. :thumbdwn:
Why haven't the redesigned this obvious failure yet? :tsk:

Problem is a lot worse on the coupes because of the extremely long strip over the door. It's probably 1/3 longer than the sedans.
I've got it all HACK'ed back on with 3M super weatherseal adhesive, let's see how long it's going to hold up.

Ugh! This has been on my To-Do list for a while now. Maybe I'll hotglue the sucker back together at the TS this weekend. It just gets me mad that all these little peeves come up after the warranty has expired!

Hot glue won't work, especially if you have to park outside. The heat down here will melt or soften the glue so it loses some tackyness.
I still have a fat tube of 3M super weatherseal adhesive I can bring this weekend.

Interestingly, my passenger door just had the mouse-fur part fall down a week ago.
My 3rd Drivers door seal is now torn...
Car goes in tomorrow for those and a few other minor items to be fixed...
