I currently have Pilot Alpins (PA2s) on my 330i (205/50/17) and they left much to be desired in a recent storm here in Denver (~4" snow). I want to upgrade to a better snow tire. Here's the question: Is the LM25 performance tire significantly better than the Pilot Alpins? Or, if I want to significantly improve traction, do I need to go with something like the Xi2? (it appears the WS-60 is not available in my size -- I already have the spare 17" rims).

Thank you in advance for your advice.

While the LM25 would indeed be a noticeable step up from the old Pilot Alpin PA2, the Michelin XIce XI2 would be even better in snow and ice. Keep in mind that the XI2 will also give up quite a bit of dry grip and steering response to get that better winter traction capability.
