i drive an '06 530xi wagon with all season tires. bridestone potenza's. i live in portland, oregon where it is mostly about rain not much snow and ice. i do drive 65 miles up to mt hood to ski 6 times a year and i have found the all seasons with the x-drive to be fine. but--here in oregon we are at times--required to "chain up". i bought a pair of spyder spikes which are a plastic chain substitute which clip on to the hub using an adapter. they work fine although this past weekend they were spraying gravel upwards and scratched the hell out of my wheel well area. it is visible and i think i might be in for a repainting. i balked the first time on buying the bmw chains but now wonder if i didnt make a mistake. how are the bmw chains? do they cause any problems? and how are they to put off and on? i could solve all of this by getting a pair of studded snows...but it seems silly to drive around on studded tires for 6-7 days of actual use and as i say the all-seasons have not been a problem.

rain can turn to ice when you least expect it, one accident and it will have been money better spent to have gotten a set of Blizzaks
