Okay, so I read on this forum how easy it is to replace the RSM's. Went out a bought a couple with the reinforcement plates. Getting all of the extraneous stuff out has not been as easy as I anticipated. I am stuck with something. Was in the process of removing the carpeting for the passenger side. Only thing is, the manual fuel door release cable runs through the carpet and the round, flat end of the cable is understandably much larger than the hole it goes through, thus, I can't get the piece of carpet out of the way.

I can't figure out a way to get the little round pull handle off of the cable without breaking it. Trying to get at least this one side done tonight (now 9:40 p.m. local).

Can anybody help with this dilemma ??????

First of all, Hapy New Year to all.

I did not get any responses to my question, so I improvised. Since my car is so old, and the grey carpet in the trunk is made the way it is, I decided to use my pocket knife and cut a slit in the carpet large enough to allow the plastic disc on the end of the manual fuel door release cable to slip through sideways. When I put it back, you could not tell by looking at the carpet that it had been cut.

The good news ...... new RSM's in and NO SQUEAK  I learned what was causing the problem and the solution here on the forum.

I'm a decent shade tree mechanic and it took me longer than I thought it would. Changing the actual RSM's was easy as pie. Getting to them was a pain in the butt. I have to buy some new fasteners to put in a few places. Didn't know how to remove the little black ones with the round center peice, so I pushed the center peice through.

Sorry didnt see the post, but the tab on the end of the wire that you pull for the release just pulls off- I expect you have worked that out now you can see the back of the tab- just releases to one side- easy to see from the back of it- not so easy when you can only see the top tho!!

Thanks Oakley. Yeah, I've already taken care of it, but would still be interested in seeing how it comes off. I'm a little confused by your response regarding the tab just pulling off. I tried every thing I knew and it seemed like it was pressed on or something. I would think that they would make it secured very tightly so it would not just pull off if you had to pull on it to release the fuel door.

When you said that you relesae it to the side, are you talking about at the end of the wire or at the actuator near the door?

Just the little tab (mines green- if its the same on urs then u'll know wot im talking about!!) the green tab with the little pic of the petrol symbol on it just kind of pulls off to the side- its really easy and simple design but hard to explain!! I'll try and take a pic so u can see!!
