A friend of mine has an 05 X3. he just bought these cf emblems for it.
the rear emblem on the tailgate sits in a ring that is about 1/2" thick. how do you remove the emblem???

I think it's one piece. I just ground off the mouning pins on the new emblem, and stuck it on with 3M body tape, and it looks great...

It is one big piece. you can remove it by using a hairdryer to loosen adhesive and taking floss and working it between the roundel and the adhesive strip. All the replacement roundels I have found are good for the hood only. I ended up filing the pins off one to make it as low profile as possible and using a liquid adhesive to "glue" it on top of the trunk roundel. Looks pretty good.

now does the ring stay on the vehicle or do you have to take it off too???

The ring and roundel are all together one piece. The roundel cannot be separated from the ring. thats why you cannot use a standard hood roundel on the trunk of the x3, you have to put it on top of the existing roundel.
