I am looking for a little help and some suggestions on purchasing a 1988 bmw M5. it has a rebuilt motor with 70-80,000 miles on it, and the car alone has 200,000 thousand on the body. the car is in good looking condition but has no AC(but not a big deal). he wants 4,000 for it and im just wondering how much tinkering, playing around and money im looking to spend. thanks

The A/C is probably just disconnected, right? Not a big deal to make work again if the important pieces are available. Anything over 130k miles requires you check the chassis for wear. Records are a big plus so you know what's been done over the years. Proper working seats and good seat upholstery condition is important since replacement parts are tough to find. If you have some mechanical skills you will be miles ahead of the game. If you will have to rely on someone else then be prepared to bend over and smile. The E28 M5 has already bottomed out as to price so I think they have nowhere else to go but up. Might be a good investment if it's been well taken care of. They always need something so it's just about what bothers you and what doesn't.
