Houston, I have a problem.
As I got into the car today, I gave the route and everything was perfect. But all of a sudden, it went crazy. It's repeating the same messages continiously, and it's trying to calculate the route (I could see it from the total distance below the split screen. In my case it was between 320 km and 230 km and it was bouncing between these two values)
The GPS connection is there (the little dots on the GPS box on the top right), but there's something definitely wrong with it.
So, my question, is there a way to hard reset the system or reboot ? :dunno:
Did anyone have similar exprience where the NAV didn't know what to do ?

Did anyone have similar exprience where the NAV didn't know what to do ? :eek:Lots of times. I assume you have a MK IV computer. What is your software rev (4-1/12 is current but has known bugs) and what map rev (the BMW 2003-2 Europe DVD seems to be out, but you may have an older one or a CD map).
I haven't seen this specific problem, but I have had a number of cases where the nav would overlay a blue "Correct dest. guidance not possible" message, even when not in guidance mode (just displaying the map). I'm told this will need both V22 software and a new map DVD (neither of which is out yet) to correct.

Hmm, I don't remember the software revision at the moment, but yes, I have the CD, I'll get the DVD next week.
So, I'm not alone with the problem, that feels better.

So, I'm not alone with the problem, that feels better. You can check the software rev on the "Settings" screen (top right). I assume you have 4-1/12, since the prior version was the "T20.10" one during the first month or so of MY 2003 production. Unless Alpina has their own version.
The DVD systems are a bit twitchy with older CD maps. A favorite trick of mine was to give me complex directions and then announce "You are not on a digitized road. Please proceed to the planned route". Plus, the format of stored addresses changed (the DVD comes with a yellow paper saying you should delete all your saved destinations and re-enter after installing the DVD disc).
Also, NavTech changed the database format and the NAV computer wasn't told about it. In my area, this is most obvious when driving from Queens, NYC to Manhattan, NYC. Driving in midtown Manhattan it still says I'm in Queens. When I cross over into New Jersey from Manhattan all is fine - the problem is in county boundaries. I'm told this will be fixed in the next NAV map/software combo.
By the way, the Europe 2003-2 DVD is downloadable from eDonkey (ed2k://|file|bmw.navigation.europa.DVD.2003_2.neuwin.on.c d.rar|1279770429|1AA8AAA8EB73DF629C63AE9D3C17DC5F|/) (if you don't have eDonkey/eMule/Overnet installed this link won't do anything). You'll also need a DVD burner and the patience to download 1.2GB.

Terry, I'll check the version, but what worries me is that the problem is still there even I turned the engine off and on a few times.
The NAV system is OEM BMW and as for the Europe DVD, I have contacted the BMW Customer Service and they told me that the dealer is supposed to suply one free of charge (which they didn't as I picked the car up, because the BMW Sales didn't inform them)
Anyway, I think a service visit is in :tsk:

Terry, I'll check the version, but what worries me is that the problem is still there even I turned the engine off and on a few times.I'm pretty sure the NAV computer is always on (otherwise if you came back to the car after a few days, it would need to search for satellites again). In any event, it is at least on the same 10-15 minute sleep powerdown as the rest of the car.

not sure if this would work, but i recall reading a post here about someone having trouble with the nav while doing ED. that person may have simply pulled the fuse for the nav in order to reset it. worth a shot? :dunno:

I have the 4-1/12 SW version.
I have the blue message (Correct dest. not possible) with the new 2003-2 CD map even if not in Autopilot mode (map mode).
I'm unable to read new 2003-2 Europe DVD (taken from a new 5 series).
Do you think it's necessay upgrade Nav software?
Thanks.

I've answered myself.... ;)
There are two different DVD version.
Part number 65900300692 is Europe DVD for E60, 65900300691 is Europe DVD for E46, 5 series (old version), 7 series.
The E46 version actually seems it's impossible to find..... maybe in August (in Italy). Or on the web :p
