View Full Version : Dry Cams on Startup?

When starting the 540, I've noticed a disturbing sound. If the car has been off for 10+ hours, I hear a sound reminisent of dry cams. It lasts only for a second or so, but I don't like it. In older cars this was a known source of wear. Have any of you noticed the same?
Is this something I should bring to service?
Should I be concerned? :eeps:

Dry cams? Can you describe the sound? The only sound I associate with 'dry cams' is valvetrain clatter from unpressurized hydraulic valve lash adjusters.
The M5's S62 engine is known to sometimes make a clattering sound from the VANOS on startup. BMW released a couple fixes for this, the first was an electric pump to pre-pressurize the VANOS oiling system, the second an accumulator to accomplish the same thing - the second was incorporated into production. Since the noise doesn't affect VANOS longevity, I'd just as soon not bother with having the extra parts added - I've never had the retrofit done.

JEM,
You described it well. Can you tell me where I can find more info on the "fixes" you described?
Thanks,

Go search over on bmwm5.com, but remember these are specific to the M5's S62 engine, not the 540i's M62TU.
What weight oil are you using?

Whatever came in the new car. I've only got 5k miles on the car. Haven't changed the oil yet (but have checked that the level is right).
