I think I may have a bad bearing in the transmission on my 95 325is (212K miles).
Yes. I've done search on this forum. From everything I read, the tranny is a GM.
My question is this ..... How can I tell the exact model of the tranny? I have a friend who can rebuild GM's and need to know this.
Thanks in advance.

If he is any good at what he dose. He should be able to tell by looking at the trans pan. GM only made like 5 or 6 auto trans in the 90's so "One in the know" should be able to I.D. with eases

you have to crawl under your car (or walk under if you have a lift available) and look on the side of the tranny where there will be a stamp or an ID. mine was something like ZF something, i dont quite remember. but its on the side i think on the left side. givie it a try, and make sure you have a flashlight handy

My friend hasn't looked at it yet. I was trying to get the information prior to him assessing it.

**** UPDATE ***** ****** UPDATE *****
I think that I may have figured out where the noise is coming from .... and I think (and am soooo hoping) that it is the center mount bearing for the drive shaft, not the transmission. It really makes sense. I'm going to crawl under it tomorrow to check it out.
Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Drive Shaft Support Bearing.
Yep, that's what I'm thinking. Going to take a hard look at it tomorrow. PM me if you're interested in a rather long explaination of the symptoms and how I came to the conclusion.
Getting late. Going to hit the sack to get rested up for the task.
