so my car was parked for a few days....we got some snow in NYC, and its very cold here.
when i get in and turn the car on it made some weird noises, then i got the error for "SERVOTRONIC MALFUNCTION" and the sterring wheel is very tight
is servotronic power steering?
then my front windows wouldnt open..and when i go to close my door, it bounced back and wouldnt close because the window in the vert needs to drop a bit to clear the roof when closing.
so when checking the forums ive noticed some people have their windows lock up in frigid temps......but after trying to warm the car for 20-30 minutes they still wouldnt move
i also saw an early thread from someone in Albany NY who had the servotronic problem
anyone got any input?
is it possible for the servo to freeze up and stop working in cold temps???

My 7 does the same thing in extreme cold weather. Servotonic Malfunction happens if the power steering fluid is a spec below minimum or it could be a bad alternator.

Actually, factoring in the wind chill, the temperature where you are is in the minus numbers. Sounds like the weather is affecting something. My first thought is to check your power steering fluid. The cold definitely affects this if the fluid is low. If the fluid level is OK, you should call BMW Roadside Assistance at 800.332.4269, to see if they can diagnose the problem remotely.
Good luck! Let us know what you find out.

thanks for the quick replies...
Mustaine: when it gets warmer, and you restart the car.....is the problem gone?
Leslierc: the car is fairly new.....its an 08 with 5k miles.....i dunno if the fluid is low tho

When it's warm, no issues at all.
When it's cold (rare, here in Dallas), the Servotronic warning pops up within 50-100 meters of driving. I pull over to a side ..... switch the "landyacht" off .... then wait a few minutes because all the battery related functions are gone for a moment. Then restart and proceed.:rofl:
P.S. I have noticed that it happens on a very cold day when I turn steering wheel to its limit, so my guess is "Low Power Steering".

CRAP!
so it's a lot warmer here...I started the car, warmed it up, and.....
windows still won't work, and I'm still getting "SERVOTRONIC MALFUNCTION"
very disheartening to have these problems on a brand new 90k bimmer

Auto Windows usually have problems like that when the weather gets cold. It has to do with the motor. I live in California where it doesnt get cold, especially to the point of 12 degrees, but all my cars have had that problem when it gets cold (especially when my car ices over). But yeah, the problem will go away in time as long as you keep your car in a warm place for a day or 2. I cant say much for the Servotronic Malfunction coz I havent had that problem.
Sounds like all these problems have to do with the cold temperature your experiencing.
Good luck tho man!
