Just trying to get an idea of how much a transmission shop will charge to swap an automatic tranny. Labor only. I will shop around of course, but I want to see what I should expect.

4-6 hours of labor x cost of the shop. I'm guessing at least 350-400, but probably closer to 600.

4-6hrs? I think most places I've talked to say R&R is at least around 8-9, but they were BMW repair shops, not tranny shops. I'm not sure which would be faster and more skilled - a dedicated BMW shop or a dedicated transmission shop.

What is R&R?

The logical assumption would be that he's having trouble with the transmission......

NO. Look for the BEST.

So I called a few transmission shops around here. Lowest was $680. Some others wont even do it.

Would a normal auto repair shops do it for a little less than a transmission shop?

I don't think I've heard of switching to an auto very often...

I'm replacing a bad automatic tranny. Not going from a 5spd to an auto if that's what you meant.

BMW specialist OR transmission specialist ONLY. Don't even bother with anything else.

going off this I'm assuming it takes experience to swap auto to auto trannys? No way a person who has never done it before could do it correctly? I was thinking about DIY but I'm guessing that I will have to bring it in?

No, it's not terribly hard, per se, but if you're going to pay someone you don't want Joe's Neighborhood Autoshop doing it, do you? It's worth the extra hundred or two to keep from having to redo it.

I'm a big fan of DIY, but when you DIY you know you have to live with the consequences and you take your time being sure everything is perfect. With a shop, it's another work order that needs to be filled. Someone that knows what they're doing can do it more efficiently and do a better job.
