I have a 94 325i and the last two times that I was filling up gas at the pump, I encountered a strange problem. The gas pump would stop automatically after every 1/2 - 1 gallons. (like it does when the tank is full) But the tank was pretty much empty both times. I had to keep doing it over and over. And most annoying was that I had to wipe off the excess gas that didn't go inside. I haven't been driving too long so I don't have experience with this. Is there something wrong? Thanks for any help. :)

make sure the vent is not blocked or kinked,if thats not the case then it's pretty normal happens to many people like me It happens because as the fuel goes into the tank it bubbles and splashes when tank gets closer to being full, the displacement caused by the bubbles force gas to go up the pipe that feeds the tank and triggers the "full" switch on the pump nozzle. Think of it like filling some coke in your cup sometimes u have to wait for the fizz to go down before u can fill it up, and ill give u a tip when filling your tank dont fill it to the top u save money and u dont get that ugly gas smell..

Try a different pump.

push the nozzel in all the way and tilt it a little (pressure escapes), that helps with the pressure which is triggering the full switch, or the pump has air in the impeller from people topping off which you can not controll.

Oh so its the gas pump and not my car? Phew, thats a relief! :D I thought something was wrong with the car. As for AJ's response, my tank was nowhere near full. I had like 2 gallons remaining when I started to fill up. And I usually fill half a tank.

Probably just a nozzle with a very sensitive over-fill sensor. If it happens at other pumps as well, then you will need to investigate your car for a problem, but I think it's unlikely to be the car.

I initially had scads of trouble with mine on every pump I tried. Either it would clunk out every half a litre or it would spurt all over me when it filled.
There's a locking mechanism on the nozzle. If you insert nozzle on a 45 degree clockwise turn then straighten it, it's locked in. You can't pull it out unless you unlock it the other way.
The seals it from spurting, and it seems to have stopped the clunking out too.

Aussie pumps anyway.

American ones dont screw the way Aussie ones do.

Better rephrase that.

No, our pumps have a little lever on the handle that pops when the fuel pressure backs up.

So do ours. I've been to the US and while it was nearly 10 years ago, I don't recall them being different.
They don't screw in. But they can lock in on the BMW. They never locked in on any other car I owned.

I have to get fuel this arvo. I'd take a pic, but I think I might scare people if I start playing with my mobile phone at the pump.
