What do you all think?
Obviously this thing will cost a lot of money and give you a combination of 5 series touring and X6. Why, really? Do the marketing people really think people want this?

Yes, they think people will like this, or are they desperate to burn cash? Not really.
All the talk about funcionality and space.....mmmm ok yes there is good space in the back, so for the comfort is cool, but what about space.... 15 cubic inches of trunk space...mmmm too little, 20 inches when the seats move forward....a little bit more...seats folded (not flat) around 58 cubic inches, that plain sucks, especially for a car this long (almost 197 inches).
So Im not convinced in the space and funcionality.
This car is very long, very wide and even taller than the 5 series, so its gonna be a heavy ass car with little funcionality for its size.
And then there is the price, priced between the 5 and the X6, which means, quite expensive.
The look from behind is the one I dont like, too bulky and not good proportions.
I wonder how related this car is to the R-class at least a bit.
I dont know, I like things either black or white, not gray. But then again, its just me.

The concept is not bad but it has it's flaws. The shape of the PAS is kind of out of proportion but it may look better in real life as cars tend to do. I like the rear seats with center divider running through the whole car. Now that's how it should have been on the X6. The rear tailgate seams like a marketing thing but it kinda seems cool. And the rear seats don't even fold flat... :thumbdwn:...The front seems good and probably will be the look of the new 5.

This new 5 resembles the old school citreon c5s or even new... the french have been doing the hatchback sedan thing for a while. I am not 100% on this take from BM... at the same time i would like to see it in person...
I am more waiting for info on sedan.

They already have the X6.
This concept seems redundant... and not as nice as the X6...

I am unsure how I feel about this car. On one hand it seems like a sportier Aztec, but on the other it looks to be a shot at the segment the porsche pana.. is aiming for. I would be suprised if their is enough demand in the market place for the X6 and the GT5. Saying this I would like to see how it holds up to the porshe in design and feel.

This is the first BMW I have absolutely no interest in owning. I feel nothing when looking at at. What is its target market again? Someone who.... does what?

Oh, I get it now. It is X7! Why do they call it 5 GT when it is as large as 7?

Why didn't they call the 650 and 550ci? That is what it is. :dunno:
I think with the weak economy, the make the 5GT smaller than an X7 to get a lower price point. I think the X7 R&D was done so they just shrunk it a bit.

Instead of increasing the number of models BMW is pumping out (new 1er, X3, X6, etc.), they should concentrate on the core competencies. This thing looks like a lowered X6 or an immitation of the Toyota Venza that no one wants

Not sure about the "non one wants."
All car companies solicit consumer feedback during the design phase. You may not want it but someone does, or they would not bother.
The biggest miss though has been the Z series. Very poor sales.
Well I'm guessing that the GT type of vehicle will generate new sales, albeit small. But it'll essentially be on the same F10 platform, so it's probably not too much extra development cost. It never hurts to have such variations on a theme, especially since BMW has great flexibility on its manufacturing lines.
It's hard to tell whether this will be a success, given the state of economy that we are in. I think BMWNA really needs to bring over the 1 series hatchbacks, now that expensive hatches like this one and Porsche Panamera are coming over.

I am sure Venza will sell well, simply because it is useful, reliable, efficient (4 cyl and I am sure hybrid will come next year) and inexpensive. It appeals to someone who does not want boxy SUV but still wants AWD and utility.
But this $80K Venza? Hmmmm.... :dunno:

By far the most unattractive BMW I've seen. :dunno:

I find myself in agreement with both of the last posts.
Every time I see a Venza commercial I feel compelled to say "that car is so ugly" or, at the least, grimace. It looks like a bread box trying not to look like a station wagon.
With regards to this GT, this is worse than the last Bangle butt. This is just a fat rear end. Can you imagine driving up behind one of these. All you see it car butt in your face.
I am sure that I am biased. I never met a hatchback that I liked. Every hatchback I can remember belonged to a mid-grade or economy car. This offering diminishes the BMW brand, IMHO.
Tell me this was due to Bangle and we'll see no more of this nonsense.

Can't agree with more. Core competencies, not fancy "new things".
Plus, this 5 GT is SO UGLY and out of proportion. At 61-62 inch high, it's more like a crossover, but the low ground clearance doesn't pose an image of beefy SUV. It's long and looks big (I bet it'll be heavy), but its trunk space is actually pretty small. What is this for? The only word I could find for it is - Pontiac Aztek.
Chris Bangle is leaving, and this might be his "swan sing". Hopefully this concept will never go production.

The E39 section has decided "What the **** was BMW thinking?"

I think 1 series should quality as a core competency, especially if we in NA could have the hatchback.
The GT and X6 are obviously variations on the theme, but BMW marketing can surely spin the story 1000 ways.
I like this better than the X6 because of RWD availability and lower height.

Again eye of the beholder: Judging the pictures at the Ring, it doesn't look too bad.

I would agree with you if we didn't have the 335i Coupe. I just don't see enough difference in size, performance or price.
As for the GT (RWD), you already have it in the 535i Touring :D Lower height and RWD.

There is no 535i Touring. The only option is 535xiT.

This thing is getting more real everyday. I have also heard that it will be built in Leipzig instead of the current 5er plant in Dingolfing.

I think the interior is quite nice.

They should just re-release E39's with updated electronics and interior instead of the F10
At least they had some nice trunk space :D
A lot depends on driving it - has anyone other than the paid testers?
THAT photo of the interior/dash is appealing, Everton, but the section across the dash below the nav panel/radio is very glossy carbonsomethingorother, looks like, and not so appealing. It might even create a glare with the sunroof open or a direct low sun at the rear. I'd probably want to tape it over before long, or stick on little dinosaurs. Maybe that's what it's for? :)

I don't know what they are. At this time I am not too concerned about sunlight glare. It can be addressed by anti-glare coating. In my opinion, don't get the ceramic package, which makes every button so shiny. It is available on 7 now.
The car can now be configurated on UK website.
