I am looking to possibly purchasing an 2002 3.0 Z3 with the power assist top option. My question is in regards to the raising and lowering the top if there is a failure with the power assist. Is there an manual over ride? I did a forum search and had no luck.

Thank you for your replies.

There is a bypass on the hydraulic pump on the driver's side of the trunk, operation is detailed in the owner's manual

There is a T handle on the pump, the pump is located in the trunk on the driver's side behind the liner material...... simple as truning the T handle.

I've often wondered if there was any reason to not just turn the handle and always use it in manual mode. Thoughts?

Well, I for one like not having to get out of my car to put the top back up when it starts raining

Why would you do that?

When I had an HMS rollbar in my 01, and had to disconnect the actuating strut from the top, it was a pita to raise the top. To lower the top was no trouble; gravity being a spring that will not fail.

My 2000 roady has had the top up & down too many times to count here in Fla. No issues for almost 6 years. Enjoy!!

This only my 3rd car with a power top Your are right who wants to get out in the rain.
My 1st with a power top was a 48 Ford, the hydraulic pump was run by a starter motor and a 59 ford hardtop convertable only worked on "very level" ground.
the rest were british MG's and Austin Healy's and one 325I. The 325I was pull up, the rest some assembly was required
