New member here, been looking at the site for months and have now joined.
My first question of many(probably):
Fuel gauge has packed up, so i had it checked by auto electrician but i think he only checked the one with the pump attached. He said it needs a new sender unit.
What i want to know is, will a unit from a 328 fit my 323? I can get my hands on a breaking 328.

Welcome to the Fest and lovely car!

I have absolutely no clue as to your question, but I'm sure one of our resident know it alls will have an answer for you shortly. Chad, that was your cue.

You could also try some searching around with the part numbers.

Hello , and welcome , from a fellow brit' 323 owner/driver/fixer-up-er .
Your car looks in "good nic" .
Looking at your picture where are you from Coronation Street ? . JJ .

chopsim323

Nope, sunny Norfolk. Yeah its not bad nick, 145k. No mods as yet but would like to do some.

Yep, as Rich said they are interchangeable.
Also, don't forget there are two.

Good lookin' car man. And, isn't "sunny {any location in the UK}" an oxymoron? :p

jbomz3
02-27-2009, 01:35 PM
We do have the odd moment of sunshine here in the UK , although not much compared to those who scorch over on the west side of the US' :yikes: . JJ .

I dont understand why there are 2 though. I know the tank goes over the prop, so which side does the fuel go to the engine from? Does the fuel get pumped from one side to the other to keep both sides level?

chopsim323
02-27-2009, 01:39 PM
It was hot here last summer for a bit. And we had sooooo much snow this winter!!;-)

E36 Phantom

Right side of car (driver's side in the UK) has the fuel pump. I believe it's siphoned from one side of the tank to the other, but I could be wrong.

chopsim323
02-27-2009, 01:42 PM
So why 2 sender units? Which sender actually feeds info to the fuel gauge?

E36 Phantom
02-27-2009, 01:54 PM
Both, it averages them. In fact, when you unlock your OBC to show extra data, you can see the info for both tanks in liters. They're usually pretty much the same, but sometimes show a bit of variation.

chopsim323
02-27-2009, 02:08 PM
Mines only the 7 button OBC. I didnt think i could access that sort of info?

E36 Phantom
02-27-2009, 02:41 PM
Nope, you can't. If you have a real OBC you can.

Yeah didn't we just , it's years since we've had snow and it be that cold at the same time .
Those on the west side of the US only see snow when they import it on a lorry for special occassions :p . JJ .

Went to the guy this morning that was breaking the 328, took fuel sender and pump out, put it in mine and BINGO!! I now have a working fuel gauge again. Now i don't have to keep working out in my head the mpg.
Actually, he took it all out and put the new one in. I said how much do you want, he said a fiver, thats 7 bucks for you guys over the pond. I was too embarrassed to give him a fiver so i gave him10 quid.
How's that for a good deal?

 That's a steal man. Simple problems rock.

And Jbomz, not all the western US ;) Just on the California coast. Northern coast (that's Oregon and Washington) can get some snow, and if you go out a few hours east you get snow as well. That's why I love California, has everything I could ever want and nothing I don't. I would never want to live in snow, but I enjoy going to it. So I get a moderate climate with lows averaging in the high 50s/low 60s for the winter, but a 3.5 hr drive gets to one of the most beautiful places in the country (Lake Tahoe) and all the snow I could desire. Meanwhile I have the City (San Francisco), Silicon Valley (where I lived), excellent beached (Santa Cruz, etc) and the 7 million person metro of the Bay Area all at my fingertips. Plus, I was just showing another member some of the damned amazing driving roads we've got, also at my finger tips (some just minutes from my house). Bay Area > anywhere else in America. :D

Another quickie. What's this? Done a search on real oem but can't seem to find anything like it. The reason i ask is because the holder that holds the cable thru that metal clip is snapped and i wondered if it making any difference?

E36 Phantom
03-01-2009, 03:46 AM
Believe that cable actuates the throttle butterfly for ASC. ASC is a totally useless system, so you could even just remove that whole throttle body and swap it for a non-ASC intake tube.

chopsim323

I don't know that much about the car to start swapping things for non stock things, if you know what i mean. Haven't really booted enough for the asc to work i dont think. Had to turn the traction control off in the snow cos that was a pain in the rear.

E36 Phantom
03-01-2009, 03:53 AM
No, it's a stock piece. It's just for cars that didn't have traction control, you can get it off any E36 without ASC. It's pretty simple, but if you don't feel comfortable with it then obviously don't feel pressured. But it's not hard to do at all.

No i know , i just like to use the old Spelling story , you know spoilt kids with rich parents so we'll import them some snow so they can have a "white christmas" and at their big house they even had a "wrapping room" that's used for wrapping presents/gifts not as some may think someone talking over a record :jawdrop: . Well, my job is to put a new thermostat in, or get one put in. New one is about 10 quid. I'll probably replace the belts while i am at it too. I don't have many tools so will get local guy to do it.

:lmao:

Import snow? You kidding? I don't think anyone, anywhere would actually "import snow". We do have something really similar in a lot of places, different outdoor malls and parks. Except they use snow makers, it takes giant things of ice and crushes it into superfine soft powder, and they put it on slopes or make it into a little slope to saucer down. And of course we've got many outdoor ice skating rinks here that are set up in the winter.

Wrapping room is probably just an extra room that the parents stash the presents before Christmas? Also pretty normal. :dunno: It's not like it doesn't get used for other things the rest of the year.....

We do have little 4 bangers. Itsy bitsy.

Really never seen snow. It's a nice 80 degrees Fahrenheit here as of yesterday... ah, just adore the Southern winter: it's summer about 5 degrees cooler.

In reality, the heat and humidity are a pain: my interior keeps melting. Oh no, you're old? I'm sorry. You should get that checked out.

Is that why you have no door card ? has it melted ? shall i get in touch with Obama to get a relief fund set up for jailbirds interior it keeps melting in the heat and will need replacing every few months ? . How'd you guess??? Yeah I just opened my door one day, and the panel just dripped right off. Ruined my shoes, I was so angry! I'll post some pics of the melty part, it's really strange. B pillars actually, both are now turned into icky tar and have the stock headliner glue/fuzz/gunk adhered all over them. I'd clean it off, but when you touch it, the tar takes skin.

If you have Obama on speed dial, then yes, by all means take care of this problem for me. Maybe you can get the weather patterns changed.

Oh no, you're really old. I'll send you a walker for your birthday... one that matches your car, so you can be pimpin and pickin up the chickies.
