I said vagina to get your attention. everyone knows sex sells. not trying to be rude or anything.
So im a high school student and im looking to buy a bmw. I really like the E36 and E46. Today i checked out this 1998 328i with 122,000 miles.
it has the sport package and premium package. Auto Transmission. 2 owners. it was a certified used car when the car was bought by the 2nd owner. the second owner did all the maintenance himself. the dealer has all the service records and such. Asking price is $7,850. This car is in the best condition ever.
Is this a good deal? do you think this car will last me through college. I know there are a million threads saying the same thing but, i had to ask. And what about the transmission. is it generally reliable?
I know about all the major defects (water pump etc.) and i plan on doing maintenance myself cause im really car handy. So if this car is well maintained by me, will it last?
Thanks for everyones input. It is greatly appreciated.
I bet most of you would have not noticed this thread if it wasnt for the "VAGINA!!!" haha:D

OP, wtf are you looking at an auto for? Get a manual, it'll be more reliable. The auto is a common failure when it gets up to higher mileage, and it's made by GM (: puke:). And 7200 is too high. Keep looking.

Yea ditto with the manual trans option. Plus it's "the ultimate driving" machine not the ultimate getting from point A to point B machine. The manual real completes the package. If you want a manual I'd suggest a Benz or Lexus, good luck with your decision.

um. well this really my only choice cause there are like 10 E36s for sale within 50 miles of where i live. And half of them are the 318s. so i dont really have variety.
and if it were up to me i would get a manual but again, i basically have 10 cars to choose from and from what i remember, none of them were manual.

Are you needed to get a car immediately for any reason? It'd be better to wait and see what else comes up. Also, why limited to the 50 mile radius? Try on a bunch of sites. If you must get the auto, talk him down drastically. That is WAY too much.
If you don't want The VHV, don't get into cars that have a EuroPlate that says PHNTMLVR. Just say no to The VHV.

Wait, what? You're seriously only looking 50 miles out in an area that's not that populated? If you don't mind overpaying and being stuck with an auto, whatever. But you can find better deals on better cars. 50 miles is absolutely nothing.
Try 800 miles.
It's worth it if you get what you love.
+1. I live in one of the most populous areas in the country and I still went 500 miles to go get the Jag, about 150 for the E39, and about 120 for the bike. If I find the exact car I want in good shape for a good price, f*ck it, I'm getting a plane ticket. They're cheap enough now anyway. I almost went to Virginia when I found the convertible I wanted a while ago, before I decided to pass on verts. Another time I actually was about to book tickets to Washington when the guy said another guy had just came and bought it after he got off the phone with me.
It's a car - it's special, it's your baby, get what you want regardless of where it is.
/soapbox.

Anyway, dont get auto. I regret buying my auto and trying to wait for a good deal on a 5-speed. Plus that is way overpriced :dunno:.

Nope. In fact, me and Amber were discussing the medical name for it (VHV) and how it spreads, is carried, etc today in chat. We pretty much outlined and defined the whole virus.

Limit your self to 50 miles? Why?
122K miles for 7+K$ w/ automatic? Don’t settle. In 6 months you’ll be saying “coulda, woulda, shoulda.”
I live on Long Island. Last January I found a ’98 328 vert., manual, w/59K on e-bay for $10,200. The car was owned by an attorney from Ft. Lauderdale FL.
Flew down and drove back to Long Island. The car is great. The previous owner just had the stealership do the complete cooling system. I did a 4 wheel brake job and changed the tranny fluid. This is my weekend toy. I”ll have her for many years.
Keep looking. :nono:

Ironically, check out the thread about the guy who just joined. 85,000 miles, looks mint in and out, $3600.
FWIW, I paid $7150 for the Jag including tax, title, & license. Took some work to find and a 1000mi r/t, but overall it was way worth it. It's about the same mileage, newer, faster, more expensive when new, and nearly mint in and out. Why anyone would pay that for a non-M E36 is beyond me. :dunno:

In the end, it really only matters what you think the car is worth.... If it is a 7K car to you, then get it. If not, pass and wait. Since you are in highschool, you'll have plenty of time to get what you want.. and you'll find what you want will change.

You forgot to tell him the bad news. Not only will it never be dropped, but you're stuck with the VHV for the rest of your life. Just thought I'd make your day bright and cheery.

IDK, I disagree. It's better to get what you love in the first place, than spend way too much on something that you may not and be stuck with it. In this market, spending too much is just moronic: if you really want to just give money away, PM me and I'll give you a great PayPal account to deposit it into.
If you don't like that option (which is my favorite, by far ), then wait a bit longer till just the right one comes on the market. Spend much less than that chunk of money, and then invest the rest in making sure the one you get is up to date on everything you can afford to get done. That would really be the most practical thing to do, especially as you don't have the luxury of using a different car while she's in the shop. Unless you like the "show up to school with mommy" look. :dunno: But you asked our opinions, and that's mine.

I bought my 97 328i with about the same mileage and features almost 4 years ago. I paid under 8k for it then and it was in flawless condition. I have the auto and it has been a great car. I was in high school when I got it and recommend the car, but like I said $8k four years ago.....if you can get it for maybe 5.5K, go for it!

Heck, I just sold a one owner '99 540 "M" sport 6 speed with 90K miles for less than $9K. Anything over $6k for a non- "M" E36 with that kind of mileage is silly.

I agree here, you can find better, my car was bought in perfect condition, at 4300. You need to keep looking unless its urgent that you get one, I drove my brother's POS truck for 3 months until I found my bmw. Be patient, the right one will come.

WHOA, sorry with all due respect, just because someone decides to get manual as the majority of his car history, doesnt mean that EVERYONE has to follow. And that def does NOT tell me to listen to that, I am trying to sell my car to get a 5-speedbut not cuz Chad does; its because I learned off a civic I have and am now ready to upgrade to a 5-speed bimmer.
The jist of it is, Just because Chad does it, doesn't mean you need to as well ;).

Manuals are more fun and engaging, but obviously they're not for everyone. In an E36, the auto does kinda suck, but personal pref. No hard feelings, the sig is there as a joke anyway, mostly to taunt Amber. :p If anyone genuinely buys or does something they DON'T want because I said they should, I pity that person. You're definitely right - but this was all in jest anyway. :p

This is what I mean, one of his previous posts was saying to get a manual, definately didn't mean to say listen to everyyything, just the trannys aren't so hot in e36's, and 5spd's are alot of fun.
I didn't think people would take my comment too serious, I mean, c'mon half the things I say are jokes.

I would have pegged your joke to usefulness ratio at something more like 75 or 80% jokes. :dunno:
BTW, we should all seriously do a Bay Area G2G this spring when I get up there. Do all the mountain roads over the Peninsula at night. Who's down?

Yeah, I've realized I'm not much of a help. haha
For sure, I will drive up, and meet with ya'll. We should do it in the day and then at night hit some clubs. We can be like the movie "Swingers" drive to each club/party/bar in a caravan of different cars just in case we get that honey that was eyein us. hell yeah.

Well April/May won't help me much since I won't be there then. :p I'm coming for my spring break around Mar 20th ish.
Brad, I was actually thinking we could meet in SC to start. I don't want to list the route map on the forum, but there are enough roads on the Peninsula to keep up entertained for up to several hours...
Sh*t, we should do like a Betty Burgers/Marianne's meet, then head up to the City for clubs or whatever, then hit the roads at night. The last thing you wanna do is the roads in the day, too crowded. I usually do my runs starting around 1am but I know most people won't be down for that late. So maybe 10 or 11 for the driving part.
