Hey guys, i just picked up my new car today. I sold my 1997 Honda Accord with 156k miles on it for $3400 and picked up this 1992 BMW 325is with 83k miles on it for $3600. I consider it a definite upgrade as the car is so much fun to drive. Love the way the engine pulls and the stick.. It's awesome! :) couple pics for now will have soon for sure :D I have been a major fan of e36 ever since i was a kid but due to monetary problems and just being handed down a car. I finally got my dream, although i might be a decade late. The car still handles like its new.

here's my old car.

DAMN! Looks clean for that age with black on black. That's one of the hardest to take care of. Good score, and 83k miles.... :wow:!

See kids, this is the kind of deal you should be looking for. Buyers market now. BTW, much love for the 925. Lots of members here from the Bay, we should do a G2G this spring....haha.

Now, you need clears, wheels, and a drop - what every E36 needs. Welcome to the Fest!

Clears would look nice, wheels maybe (at least they aren't hub caps) and what ever you do don't "drop":nono:

A) No American BMW came with hubcaps.
B) What?! What on earth would you say no drop for? Got something against improving your suspension?

I'm with Westie on this one , it needs to be lowered , mine as what they term m-tech suspesnsion don't know how much lower that is compared to standard but the rear arch sits across the top of the rear tyre , not enough gap for someone to get their head stuck . Sorry it's opinions again but i don't like to see the anti-chip stuff that adorns the wheel arch . Looks in good nic though . JJ .

I didn't say they did, it was in reference to my own BM' which of course did. As for the lowering I don't know of any benefits. And I prefer the factory look myself.

Yes it's a matter of taste . Mine had the double spokes like yours when it was new , not sure where they went but the spare is still the same but now it has some different Bm' wheels , that are starting to grow on me abit wasn't keen at first . I like the lowered look (normally i don't) but i'm not too keen on the plastic hump strips type speed bumps they have at my local Bm' dealers , i have to stop to go over them any sort of momentum and it bottoms out on the front sill/floorpan ? it sounds to rigid to be the mudflaps :bawling: . JJ .

I take it you aren't too familiar with suspensions? Springs and shocks generally will greatly improve handling if you get something reputable like H&R + Bilstein. The lowering isn't solely what improves it, but it looks nicer (subjective) and does lower the center of gravity by an inch or more. The big returns are in the improved stiffness and better dampening which keep your car more stable and planted when cornering, especially over undulating pavement which can really throw a car off balance. You can get better shocks for stock springs, but there aren't any springs that have a higher spring rate and stock ride height if you really like the stock look.

Obviously, though, if you don't like it then don't do it. I don't try to pressure people into things, just inform them. It's each person's individual car, and if it makes me happy but not the owner, that's totally irrelevant. :)

Anyway, I don't want to take this thread off topic too much. Congrats again to the OP!

We don't drive on the pavements over here, police tend not to be too happy about that.

To the OP - your car looks excellent! Nice find with the low-ish miles. Now get to work on the cooling system, RTABs & RSMs, FCABs and any other maintenance/wear items that haven't already been dealt with.

And a decent set of springs and shocks - like this one: http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=31005-2 - would do wonders for the handling of the vehicle without making the ride unbearable.

A) No American BMW came with hubcaps.

False. I've actually seen more than one E36 318i with hubcaps. I've even seen an E46 with them. Really. Not common, but they exist.

B) What?! What on earth would you say no drop for? Got something against improving your suspension?

I hate, loathe, detest and absolutely revile the word "drop" when describing a suspension upgrade. Really. LOWERING springs is even a stretch. Just because the car sits lower, doesn't mean it handles better.

I know you know that mister ex-E36 driver :p

E36 Phantom
03-01-2009, 06:34 AM
Grrr, I meant E36. Personally I've never seen one E36 with hubcaps, and I've seen many. Of course, 318s are just 4 cylinders, what do they count for anyway? :p

Drop. Drop. Drop. Drop. Drop. You're a drip.

I do believe I just explained above precisely what you just said. ADD today there buddy, couldn't finish the whole thread? :p If you ever are around BFc (I stumble in there occasionally) it's just the common mantra for what every E36 "needs". More specifically "Clears, LTWs and a drop."
And :lmao: @ "Some Guy Named Chad".

a drop will happen in the near future but not soon. Rims would come first though for sure, then headlights, taillights. I don't know about putting clears, I kinda like the amber ones ;) but that's just me. And yes, we should have a G2G once the sun comes out for good. :) My passenger side fog lights cover is smashed tho. Do you guys know where i can find a replacement for it??

03-01-2009, 08:20 AM
Ask Jasonf860......

In all seriousness, there are a few BMW parts places over there. I think one in Hayward and one in Berkeley. Check craigslist, eBay (only buy a used OEM one), parting out sections.

Headlights and taillights = ddmtuning.com. Check the website for package deals, and they're usually willing to put together a discounted package deal over the phone with you if you've got some things you wanna buy at the same time.

I did mention the showing off of the wheel arch .
It isn't really wide enough to get it sideways , there's too many shiney new bm's around to be that loose with the rear end . But if i catch the aformentioned undercarriage i do moan and bitch about it when i go in the parts deparment (never bovver with the srvice desk it's for white collar , not the blue collar scum like meself) .

Beautiful car to the OP. Exactly the same as mines except when I bought mines all the windows were tinted, and he also had 300+ lbs chrome rims on the car. Those instantly came off for the lighter stock ones. I bought my baby for $1100 with 140k on the odo. As of yet I've invested about another grand and she is by far one of, if not the best car, I've owned. As any other member will tell you, STAY ON TOP OF THE MAINTENANCE! I had an accord and all my parts cost me ten dollars and a mayonnaise sandwich, but at 162k, she felt and drove that old. My bimmer, minus a few quirks, still feels solid when driving, and I have yet to hear any wobbling or shaking noises. Although you'll pine for a bit more torque of the line while shes still stock, the reliability she'll give you is second to none. Just don't be mad when a civic burns you off the line. Laugh at them when their coffee can mufflers rust off.

Ok, those are called "self indexing windows" and yeah, the indexing can come out of adjustment sometimes. The readjustment is described in the Bentley. PM me if you don't have a Bentley manual.

Yeah it was pretty bad. In fact, after your explanation, I realize that everything I thought you were saying was wrong....... :p

Why ??? How can you not understand that ? :eeps: . JJ .

Right , i meant i'd leave the comments about jailbird alone now (the whole bad girl thing) rather than just keep letting it go on and on . Is that better for you ?
Then the windows bit wasn't that misunderstood was it ? I'll look again later if it's not raining all day  . Oh the bent bit and neighbours , i have a pair of homosexual men nextdoor , it's not me but eh whatever floats your boat , eh ? Bent also means homosexual here .
Oh thanks by the way "i love you man" , it's been along time since anyone's said that to me and never with a "man" on the end of it . JJ .

Wow, ok I had sort of interpreted the jailbird statement correctly. Everything after that I was completely wrong on. Stupid windows and rain....

 You're welcome. What do they call you then, if not man? Woman? Brotha-man? :D

Good i'm glad that's all cleared up , the "is that better for you?" was aimed at the explanation not is better to stop or carry the joke on (hope you understand) .

Shag? Do I even want to know why? Yes, it's better for me. We'll have to limit things like that to the Chat. That place is scary.

Yep cause Eagle Eyes was so fitting! Just had to point out irrelevant things.... :p

Our E36 chat.... look at the stickies. Limit the off topic-ness.... which isn't working too well for me, it seems.

 I'm just snobby about it, not used to having a messed up front end like this one is. :D

If you buy a car with the idea of doing a bit of work on it to tidy it up and to personalise it to your taste , it doesn't really matter with minor cosmetics plus it all gives you something to do , i've not gone to work since 23rd may 2008 been busy with my old banger , it's kept me busy . But my other one cost me a lot more and i spent more on it yet it was newer and better condition i didn't do any greasy/dirty stuff it went to a bm dealer and i paid muchas dollars for it all . JJ .

True true, I just happen to be very impatient. And I like to be able to start on the personalizing and upgrading, instead of repairing what an idiot did due to improper care. :dunno: It's ok, still like my car. Most of the time. Not when it rains.

I was told not long after buying my first beloved mz3 , a ford driver will put up with something working just 50% of the time where as a bm' drivers like things to work 100% of the time . I'm 100% of the time person anyway , if it's there i want to use it and use it till it breaks and needs replacing . JJ .

That's because with a Ford, it's NEVER working more than 50% of the time. They're used to it.

Things turn into brakes? Nifty. ;)

I always assumed when people said "breaks" instead of "brakes" for the little rotors that slow down the car, it's just cause they were so programmed into using "breaks."

Now you're messing with my whole theory!!!
