M50 (B25) 2500 Engine start-up rattle

Hi all

A simple one this I think. My engine rattles for a couple of seconds when starting having left the car overnight. It doesn't do it within a few hours of last running. It sounds a bit like little or even big end rattle of the sort we got from engines years ago.

I guess there is a leaking non-return/anti-drain valve in the filter housing or somewhere similar that causes the engine oil to drain out slowly causing a "dry" start.

Can someone tell me what my problem is please?

I would think either VANOS or timing/cam chain. What year is your 5? Do you know if you've got the TU engine?

(BTW, this is the 3 series forum, but you probably know that. It's OK since you've got the same engine).
