Removing glass lenses

I have the 2000 headlights with clear lenses and like the look with the the fluted glass lenses removed. This is like the later angel eye lights but without the rings. I am not that crazy about the rings themselves but like the look without the glass lenses.

Does anyone know if these lenses can be removed without affecting the focus or the light pattern? I would guess that since BMW made this change later anyway it should be OK unless there were other lense structure changes that they made when they went to angel eyes.
