View Full Version : Tire upgrade?

As we get closer to spring, it is almost time to swap out my winter tires and put on my summer tires. After 14k miles, my rear tires need to be replaced as they are down to the wear bars, but the front still have about 1/2 of the tread remaining. I have been satisfied with the performance of the ContiSportContact 2 tires that came as part of the sports package. Ride comfort and road noise were acceptable. I did 2 HPDE track events at Watkins Glen last summer and the tire performance was good, but not great. I am considering replacing the rears with the ContiSportContact 3 and continue to use the ContiSportContact 2 tires on the front to use up the remaining tread. I would expect that I have enough tread remaining to make it through the entire summer. I plan to do 2 more track events this coming summer, but this is not the driving factor in my tire choice.

The simple answer could be just get the Sport 2 and be done with it. So I am asking is the Sport 3 considered an considerable upgrade from the Sport 2? If so, would there be a problem mixing the (although similar) two different tread patterns? I looked at the specs for each tire and the only difference I found was that the load/speed rating for the Sport 2 is 96Y XL while the load/speed rating for the Sport 3 is 96Z XL.

I am running 275/R30 19 for the rear and 245/R35 19 for the front

It is NOT recommended to run two different tread patterns, let alone two new tires/two used tires. Just buy all four Conti3's and keep the two front Conti2's as spares/emergency tires. Let me know if you need help with your tire purchase.
