When to buy summer tires

Hey Gary -- I'm looking at a new set of summer tires in the next 6-12 months. Are summer tires like winter tires in that the selection is best at the beginning of the season (March-May?), or is that not so much of an issue.

Not an issue as they are normally year round for the lower half of the country.
