Hi all,
I drive a 2001 X5 3.0, 76000 Mi. recently the ABS, Break and traction lights are comming on and off. Took the car to the dealer and was told that i have faulty traction control unit. The replacement would cost me around $1000. Have any of you experienced this before?
Is this something i could replace (DIY)? If yes any recommendation on where to buy the new unit.
Thanks for the help.
AJ

A colleague had a similar problem with an E46 and it turned out to be a wire that was pinched because it was routed wrong from the factory.

If you're confident in the dealership's diagnosis of the module being bad, what about trying to get a replacement from a salvage yard and have the dealer install and program it? Might save you some bucks.

Sounds something like the dreaded e39 ABS/DSC module problem. Is your odometer working? If not that could be it.

If you want to fix whats actually causing it your going to need a lift and some time (if you dont have the GT1 BMW scanner). The first thing to do is take off all 4 wheels (good time to clean all the brake dust out from the backs of the rims) pull out and clean all 4 wheel speed sensors. When you put them back in start up the car, good chance the lights will be off and your all set. If not id buy one new speed sensor, take out one old one and install the new one, check for the lights, if they are there try the new sensor on another wheel untill you find the one that wasnt working. If you try all 4 wheels with no success then the stealer was right, your ABS modual is in need of repair. Look up modual masters for a cheap fix.

+1 on Module Master. (if that ends up being the problem.)
