My friend ('98 M3/4) is trying to pull his transmission, and it is stuck. Any tips or tricks as to how to get it out of the car?

Didn't you say your friend is a mechanic?

Yes, but he works on all types of cars... and he has never done an E36.

The transmission is unbolted, but it won't drop out. A call to the dealer resulted in "use force and yank it out with a few guys" - understandably, he thinks the Germans engineered it a bit better than that.

He wants to know if anyone has tips.

Hmm, unfortunately the TIS on this PC is broke (no pics) but the descriptions don't sound too involved. Disconnect everything (driveshaft, shifter, reverse switch, slave cylinder, etc.) and drop it.

Mike,

You might want to shake the bushes over at bimmerforums. There is a lot more tech talk present on their E36 M3 board. I do agree, just having a few guys "yank" on it sounds a bit crude to me.

Definitely check out bimmerforums to see if they have any ideas. It's not the same car, but the gearbox on my M3 came out without much trouble once the bolts were removed. Removing those bolts, however, was a MAJOR PITA.

The last time I pulled a transmission out of a car was bout 10 years ago when I was taking 'shop' at my local JC. There's always some little thing hidden out of view that keeps the thing from coming out. Have him to a once, err twice over the entire transmission, it's gotta be 'hanging up' on something, otherwise it'd just drop right out.

There is a nasty, hard to reach bolt on top of the bell housing. If you got that... well... start yanking.
