Cant you do it yourself mate? - http://www.bimmerdiy.com/diy/e36oilchange/
Is not a big job so, if you take it to a garage, they should not charge much in labour
Also depends what oil you use...

I vhanged the oil this past weekend in my Range Rover myself, cost me $27 for 7qts plus the filter. I took the Benz to someone for the oil change just because it's a PITA and it was $60 but the car also takes 8.5qts :dunno: $29 seems to be the average around here but I did my BMWs myself.

I pay $9/qt of Royal Purple, cost of filter, and an hour of my time.

these cars are thirsty for oil and when you pay anywhere from 6-9 bucks for a quart, X 8 quarts plus the filter, well do that math its not a cheap oil change.

I think that almost 99% of the people here on the forums do their own oil changes, so :dunno: id start reading the DIY that Pirate posted.

It all depends on where you go. Best bet is to buy the oil and filter yourself, and then bring it to the shop/mechanic and tell them to do it for you. They usually overcharge on that stuff so getting it beforehand will help minimize costs.

Drive you car, or ride your bike to Jiffy Lube and ask.
But doin it yourself will teach you new things about your car! We all recommend that!

Do it yourself, Its 2 bolts and oil cap I believe besides dipstick (1-drain plug, 1- filter cap, Oil cap- top of your engine) Read the DIY, and dont go uber cheap on your oil (not regular penzoil or any generic oil for that matter , its wax based oil resulting in making a jello mold out of your valve cover). Put decent synthetic in it, castrol, mobil1, etc, not your local gas station junk. Please dont do that to a Bimmer. If you cant??? then buy the oil and take it in.

That's like going to a restaurant and bringing your own ingredient for the chef to cook! :thumbdwn:
No offence! ;)

Yup! Like the Strata does not allow one to perform any mechanical repairs in the garage and it cost $250 in fines for doing so! Condos suck!

an hour of your time really chad? anyway
i did it the other day took 20 minutes. seafoam your car before you do it. wait thats probably to hard for you too op.
$7/qt for Mobil 1 and ~$8 for a filter. About $50 total. And about a half an hour of my time/
Will run you anywhere from $85-105 at the dealer dependent on the time of year....

Well, im pretty sure that the 20 mins that you changed the oil, not all the oil had drained. I even buy and extra quart so that I can flush out all of the dirty oil.

You can't change oil properly in 20 minutes. You need to let the pan drain for 20 minutes alone. If you actually did start to finish in 20 minutes, it wasn't complete.
I like to let it drain, sit back and have a beer and do whatever for 20ish minutes, then finish it up. That way it actually drains all the way.

Shut the garage door, and no one is the wiser ;)

well it was like 30 minutes 20 for the drip 10 for the rest. haha i know how to change oil. i would just think an experienced guy like you could have it done in less than a hour, maybe take someone like the op an hour or more. just tryin to emphasize how easy it is to change your oil instead of takin it to some place to over charge you for mediocre oil and probably a lack of care put into your car.

I agree with the hour. I sit back and have a beer, let it all drain, and start it for 5 mins let it sit for 10 check it again usually got to add a bit more and its good. BUT IN ALL HONESTY DO IT YOURSELF. The only time I have taken my car anywherE was to do an alignment and put tires on it. I even make them let me drive the car in and let me drive it out, Nobody has driven my car besides my father, my buddy ONCE when I was hamered, and me. I literally have to drive everywhere I go, lack of trust because I have almost been killed 3 times by other drivers.. NOW GO CHANGE YOUR OIL

$37.20 for my truck.
change my own on the car
which really when you think about it doesnt make much sense because the truck is much much easier to get under :dunno: guess only because the oil gets changed in that truck once every 20 years
when I had my E36 I never did the oil change once, always took it to some shop with my own oil and filter, I didn't want to mess with a lowered car and doing the oil :p
with the M5, I did it at the end of my driveway, halfway on the driveway and halfway in the street, good stuff
the E36 always cost $100 to do an oil change and I would go 5-7k
the M5 after doing my first oil change on her it only cost me $80 because my neighbor had one extra quart of TWS 10w60 so I only had to buy 6 quarts :p. That stupid oil is $10/quart. Luckily being a chapter member I get 10% off the oil :D

60-100 bucks. I buy Royal Purple and the filter and take it to this Mobil 1 shop where there are a couple of Audi dudes that do it. And for me, it's just much simpler and i can be lazy.

I agree w/ e36mike. Even if you let it drain for an hour there is still oil in the engine. You will never get it all out, EVER. It's dirty oil, not radioactive waste. And if you guys use royal purple, even if it's dirty it's better than most oil out of the bottle. I get mine done at Sears $50, full synthetic.
