How do you become one?
What are the duties?
Are they compensated?
Anything else you can tell me (fact or fiction)

You accumulate thousands of posts and become an integral member of the community, and you tell Jon you want the post.

You monitor the forums for anything that does not comply with the TOS.

You get access to the mod forum.

Not entirely true. Some users have very few posts (e.g. Gary@Tirerack), but would still be deemed to be integral parts of the community.

In addition, I don't think you *apply* for a position. Rather, Jon appoints you. I once applied to be "Moderator of the Moderator Board" (read: Brain Trust) but said application was never processed, FWIW.

So how much power do they wield?

I posted something the other day which one the moderators didn't like (the sarcasm got lost on him) so he closed the thread.

You'll encounter different styles on different forums. The majority of moderators employ more of a hands-off, easy-going type of style, intervening only when necessary. That's good.

A select few really take the position to heart, stating things such as (and I quote) "I ain't takin' no sh!t from no one". That's not good.

Hopefully you are not too vocal on world events. ;)

All in all, you will really enjoy the 'Fest, and the moderators will/should largely be transparent.

Let me add a few points about how one qualifies as a moderator :

- You must run 100 meters under 10 secs
- You must sleep maximum 5 hours a day
- You must hijack at least one thread per week

If you have to ask about "power", you probably don't deserve the position, IMHO.

I need to update my address on file. I never seem to get the checks (and I could use one now).
