View Full Version : What's your cruising RPM range

I hit 3000 at about 110KM (just under 70MPH). What rpm range do you cruise at? What about German E46 owners? 100MPH would be in the 4000 RPM range. Wouldn't cruising at that high RPM range age the engine prematurely?

Hmm, I don't remember my speed exactly but I usually drive between 3000-4000 RPM.
I'm not sure, I usually don't pay attention to the exact range. usually near 3500 though. I would preffer to cruise near 5K
Why dontcha drive it in 4th? :)
I have a 3.46 diff so I'm usually over 3500.

I was just wondering if cruising at above 3,000 would do long term damage to the engine and drive train. BTW, I change the oil every 5,000 miles or so.
Why? It runs more 'freely;' you're lugging the motor less, so as long as its not up at redline all the time, its probably under less stress.
Besides, its a BMW L6. All the beautiful sounds (per last year's commercial) are barely audible until it's up around 4k. :)

I've posted this before...
I have a Step '01 330i and on the highway I normally cruise at 80mph@2,700rpm
I've tripled checked this many times and other people seem to be closer to 3,000rpm when going 80mph.
Because that is correct. 0.74@5th on a AT, 3.38 final drive with a 25in dia tire (assuming stock SP tire) will give you 80.2MPH@2700RPM.
On my car, 1.00@5th on MT, 3.46 final drive with the same tiresize will give 80.6MPH@3750RPM.
FYI, a 330i MT will go 79.9MPH@3150RPM.

02 330i w/ step
Just did 4,500 miles of cruising in the past 14 days so I the RPM's still register with me :)
65 MPH (between Birmingham AL and Mephis TN) -- 2,400 rpm
70 MPH (Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas @ night) - 2,500 rpm
75-85 MPH (New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada) - 2,600 - 2,800 rpm
