View Full Version : E36 Window Grinding Gears?

The driver's window on my '94 E36 vert keeps getting stuck in the "up" position. When this happens, I have to smack the toothed arm on the regulator so that it properly meshes with the motor gear, then it goes down just fine. All works well (up and down) until I close the window all the way; when the window reaches the top of its travel, the motor keeps going and I hear what sounds like the gears grinding, at which point the window is once again stuck and I have to smack the regulator arm again to get it to open properly. It looks like the motor gear is trying to go too far and is jamming on the last tooth on the regulator.

I've already tried the "open window/close window/hold button" initialization sequence but it hasn't helped.

Does anybody know if there's some adjustment that tells the motor to stop turning when the window is fully closed?

I do believe the black plastic bushing around the gear shaft have come loose. You have to take the regulator and motor out. The plastc bushing is attached to the regulator and the gear shaft goes into the bushing. Just hammer the bushing hard into the reg so it does not fall out again and put some kind of glue so it does not come loose again. Put together again and do the window reset. You might have to use the door post switch and pull on the glass up to get the window up first. Hopefully not too much damage the plastic gear inside the motor that it will still work for you.

Have you had the window out or replaced before this started? If so, you may need to pull the relay in the main fuse box and let it be out for about 5 minutes and then replace it.
Some A-hole busted out my window and I had the same problem after it was replaced. It is a simple procedure and the price is right. Free! This fixed the problem for me. Good Luck

No, I haven't had the window replaced. It started acting up awhile ago, where it wouldn't go up all the way unless I kept pressing the button to raise it inch by inch. Then it stopped working altogether and I had to pull the door panel off to lower the window manually and ever since then it gets jammed if I put it all the way up (like my wife did to it yesterday )

I'll unjam it again and then try pulling the relay and see if makes a difference. Thanks for the suggestion!
