So I'm changing my clutch. I dropped the entire exhaust system, disconnected the drive-shaft, took the entire damn drivetrain apart, fought the mother $%^#ing son of a whore peice of $%& ass-raping ^&*$ sucker pressure plate bolts off, one of which required a specal external bolt extractor and an impact wrench, clean the flywheel, install the new clutch, put the transmission back on the car, clean and reinstall the shift linkage, and as I press the clutch pedal in to make sure everything is working correctly my slave cylnder f*cking EXPLODES and $hits it's own piston into the tranny whilst pissing fluid all over my friend Dom's driveway. The M3 spends the night on jackstands until I can get a slave cylinder from my good friends at Global Imports BMW tomorrow.

Like poetry, Philip. Eloquent, yet effective. Good luck with the slave cylinder replacement.

Sorry for the extra "L" in your name. I edited my original posting, but you had already quoted it......:(
I had a slave cylinder do that to me, in downtown traffic during rush hour. It was an interesting trip home.

 holy crap, I guess it could be worse. Did you just cruise home in whatever gear you happened to be in?

I would kick it out of gear and shut it off as I came to a red light, restart in gear, and throttle-mesh (match the engine speed to the driveshaft speed) to shift. I had my three-year-old daughter with me at the time. I never, ever want to do that again. That was 20 years ago. I still recall it with cold chills.

OMG, so when the light turned green, it would actually be your starter propelling you through the intersection?

The piston probably wasn't mated to the lever in the tranny. Without the resistance the seals blew. I was actually shipped a defective FEBI slave cylinder that did the same thing to me. Just looking at the FEBI next to the FTE though the FEBI looks like it's going to explode so i should have guessed.

dang, that sounds like a mess. Add this to the reason I dont think I want to do my own clutch...lol hope all is well soon and you get that thing back on the road where it belongs.

Well you had the n*ts to take this on at least. I wouldn't jump in those kind of waters at all. Those tranny, drive train taking apart waters.

No, I'd have it in second gear and it would turn over about twice and fire up. It only moved a couple of feet before the engine would crank, then I was on my way.... Thank God it was tuned up and cranked easily.
Philip, on mine, the linkage broke....corroded in two. When the rod was gone (moved out of the way when it broke) the piston blew out the end of the slave cylinder, and the clutch pedal went to the floor.

That's awesome. And that's still a torquey starter motor!

I just replaced my clutch with the UUC M5 sprung hub and press. plate w/ the ltw. flywheel while I was doing my swap. I hope this doesnt happen this weekend when I finally get it started and on the road again. Mine was replaced like 2-3 years ago.

OBD1 Kenobi is officially back on the road. My buddy didn't completely tighten one of the exhaust flanges that connects the exhaust mani to the downpipe, so I have this awesome exhaust leak that whistles under load from 3000rpm to redline. By the time I realized that it was too late to put the car back up so I said screw it, it will get addressed this weekend. I have actual work to do. I also have a nice set of S52 headers that need to go on my car, so maybe this exhaust leak is a sign from the ancient Bavarian horsepower gods that I need to get off my ass and install them.
Outside of that I highly recommend the Sachs OE replacement clutch kit to anyone at this point. The new one feels great. Not as great as boobs, but pretty damn good.
Goodnight Fest.

Ah, they're all internet tough guys, I've been to plenty of Varsity meets and Caffeine & Octanes and they're all friendly and cordial in person. Even M3Bill.

Bump because my front right shock just disassembled itself in an explosive manner while I was driving down the road. Time for Bilsteins I guess.
