This is a pretty pedestrian request, but could someone recommend replacement brake pads for a 2000, 2.3 z3? My original pads have worn down (27k miles). Should I replace with BMW parts, or is there a better manufacturer out there?
Again, sorry for the boring question, but I appreciate any direction you can offer.

Depends on what you want.
The OEM pads are actually pretty darn good for general street use. Their only real down side is that they create a ton of dust, and therefore you have to clean your wheels quite often. You can get "dustless" aftermarket pads that perform well and don't require cleaning your wheels every week.
While you're in there changing your pads, you might inspect the rotors, and caliper pieces as well.

Last spring, I sent my original wheels out to be chromed. It appeared the previous owner had used something harsh on them and they had lost their clear and some of the paint was peeling off.
While I had it up on jackstands, I did a complete brake overhaul. That included steel lines, removing, cleaning and painting all calipers etc.
I used the Cool Carbon brake pads from Bavarian Autosports. They were on sale and I thought I'd give them a shot. Used ATE Super Blue fluid for the fluid flush.
I've been very happy with them. Great stopping power and very little dust.
And the calipers look real nice behind the chrome wheels.

A quick search will turn up lots of options...
My favs are...
Axxis Deluxe - are a good low dust pad for street use
Axxis Ultimates - higher dust (still less that OEM) street/autocross
