'm new to the forum and have a simple question. My wife recently noticed a noise like hole in a muffler and noticed the car didn't have pickup, then the check engine light came on. The dealer says the timing chain is broken or breaking and there are metal shavings in the oil. He is recommending a new engine but I can't afford it right now. Shouldn't changing the chain and flushing the engine get rid of most of the particles and the rest would be filtered out? Just need some advice as a used engine is over $6000. Thanks

If you cannot afford a refurbished engine, you will be looking at parting your car out. If the timing chain is broken, likely other things have gotten broken also in the process, not a good thing. Looking back at your post, the dealer says your timing chain is broken or is breaking, it's either one or the other and neither are good. You are on the east coast so you should be able to find a halfway decent engine for less than $6K....I wish you luck in your search.

Something happened and no one paid attention. Sad.

If the chain is broken the motor wouldnt run. If the guids/sprokets are just falling apart then yes you can open it up and change all that out. The mechanic doing the work will know quickly if the motor has sustained any damage from the metal parts floating around. No suprise the dealer says new engine, they will say that in any situation rather than opening it up and fixing the problem.

Once there is pieces of metal anywhere in the engine it's pretty much downhill from there for the rest of the car's life unless you change the engine completely out
