View Full Version : Delivery Day

I took delivery of my 335i today at the BMW Welt. All that I have read in this forum has proven true. Thanks to everyone for helping me prepare. My family had a wonderful day, but after the delivery and a tour of the museum, we were all very tired (we arrived yesterday). By luck the factory was closed today for a holiday. A tour would have been too much for us in one day. We will do the tour on Monday.

One small piece of advice to others planning ED. Our schedule arrival time was 12:50, and we were told that would give us "plenty of time" to see everything. Wrong. We should have arrived earlier (maybe an hour) and took some time to relax in the Premium Lounge before the delivery process began. We barely had time to eat some of the good food.

I have included a few photos.

The 2nd picture was taken from the delivery floor of the Welt, looking toward the BMW headquarters and museum.

I have read on this forum about people not receiving their iPod cable on delivery. I did not receive mine, and at the time I was too overwhelmed to notice. I contacted my CA at home and he said I should have gotten it. We are returning tomorrow to attend the factory tour, so I will ask about it then.

I have about 400 miles on the car since Friday and I love it. Fast, smooth, quiet, engaging. The iDrive features are too much at the moment. I will learn them over time. I got the basics to work. The nav system is very nice, more complex but more feature-laden than my portable Garmin. I was not successful at getting the <BMW routes> to import. The <import from USB> item was grayed out. I will remove other files from the flashdrive and try again.

Super Plus gas is about $7.60 per gallon, but worth it to drive on Bavarian back roads.

Tomorrow we leave Munich (we are staying with an old friend) and head towards the Schwarzwald and Alsace, on the way to Luxembourg. We have 3 days to get to Lux. so we will take our time and enjoy the ride and scenery.

I will check in again when I get access to another computer.

You mean your CA was supposed to give it to you before you left, no? :dunno:

One of the reasons many people here recommend using CAs who are experienced in overseas delivery is so you don't end up in Munich missing something, even something small like the iPod Y-cable.

Yep. I mentioned it to my CA before I left and he told me that they give them to you there. I told him I was "pretty sure" they didn't and could I have one "just in case". :) I'd have had no clue if I didn't read it here.

Just got home. Had no internet access for the rest of my trip.

I had all my music on a flash drive so I didn't worry about not having the iPod cable. At the Welt they told me that I could buy a cable and get reimbursed back in the States. I passed. One disconcerting note is that the flash drive is always powered up, even when the car is parked. I suppose it is only a small drain on the battery...

My CA was unexperienced with ED, as you noted.

No, most definitely not!

Are you saying it is a good or bad thing that the flash drive is always powered up?

Neither. Iīm saying it is NOT always getting power.

I have to disagree with you. My flash drive has an orange light (Cruzer) and it was always on.

You can feel free to disagree but it wasn't always on nor was it always getting power when the car was off.

I'm curious how you would even know it was on once the car went to sleep anyway.

Well, when I got into the car, before hitting the Start button, I opened up the center console and saw the USB stick illuminated. My conclusion was that the port is always powered. If the act of unlocking and opening the door "wakes up" the car and powers on the USB port, you may be right. I suppose I'd have to leave the console cover open and sneak up to the car (without key in pocket) to know for sure.

Silver with black interior: classic, will age well, but maybe a lack of imagination? I think it is beautiful, though.

OK, here are more pictures.

There is one along the Route des Cretes in the Vosges mountains in Alsace, France. If you've ever driven the Blue Ridge Parkway in the States, this is similar. Fun in a BMW, and great scenery.

So when you stated it doesn't power down, you actually weren't observing the car in a powered-down state, it would appear.

Your proposed procedures for observing the car (highlighted) are almost correct. The vehicle would have to be asleep, not just locked.

You seem to know something that I don't about "awake" and "asleep" states of the car. Please elaborate.

Although admittedly I donīt know what you donīt know, not all modules go to sleep immediately when you turn the off. (From what I understand, different modules go to sleep at different times based on what seems to be a complicated schema and one that is certainly beyond our discussion here.) I am fairly certain, however, the power to the USB module does turn off within 15 min. of so.

You originally claimed that power is always present. Since you hadnīt checked after the vehicle began to enter a state of sleep, you had no evidence to support the claim.

As I mentioned, power should go off to the USB module after 15 min. or so. To verify this, I would leave the armrest up, lock the car, and come back in 30 min (very quietly, since the car will be asleep ).

This has been a fun exchange. Reading about the nocturnal nature of our BMWs here at one am has made me very sleepy.

Thanks for the explanation. Since my car is en route to the States and I won't see it for many weeks, I'll have to defer this experiment until then. Perhaps someone else with a 2009 model could share their observations.

I did notice that even after shutting down the car, and then pushing the Start button a second time to shut down the iDrive, the light on the Start button and the gear indicator light did stay on for a while longer. They did eventually go dark. (I discovered this one night in Luxembourg when we got locked out of our B&B and had to sleep in the car for a few hours--part of our European adventure!)

Happy to oblige.

One thing - it really wonīt matter if someone performs the experiment on a MY 2008 or 2007 - this hasnīt changed in the car.
