View Full Version : Paint Thickness and Appraisal

I took my 2006 650I convertible to the BMW dealer as a possible trade-in.

The appraiser reported, after using a paint thickness gauge, that I had had a body repair to my right rear quarter. This was based upon some thicker paint (7 mil vs 4-5 mil elsewhere). I know for a fact that there was never any work done on my car.

I found elsewhere that BMW (and other German cars) is typically 4-5 mils. The same article also indicated BMW (silver, my color) at 7 mils.

So the readings appear to be in range but there is a variation over the vehicle. The left vs the right rear panels are different as the salesperson used the gauge to show me.

The salesperson said that he believed me and the appraiser finally allowed that maybe it was OK.

But, this is really annoying to have been initially accused of hiding some accident damage.

Anyone else with experience on paint thickness variation? This seems to be very common now for dealers to use paint thickness when appraising trade-ins.

I also wonder if there was a factory or dealer initiated repair before I took possession of the car. Any way of determining or is this on record? This car was a Euro Delivery, wondering if there was damage in transit not reported to me, but fixed upon arrival and before turning back to me.

i never had to go throught the paint test when trading in, but that sucks. if it was damaged through transit, they'd usually notify you so you can take action on it, not just fix it imo

It's definitely possible. Stuff happens as cars traverse across the pond and the VPC fixes any issues before sending the car on to the dealership. You would think a paper trail would exist, but I don't know for sure.

I have read stories of people waiting for an ordered car that was held up at the VPC and later finding out a repair was the reason.

I have read where simple fixes (scratched/dinged fender), were fixed and never revealed. Repairs above a certain amount are. :)

So, I'm reading this and also cognizant of the 300 or so Bimmers that were damaged and repaired in 2008:

and thinking to myself: on a $70K M3 - which just landed in NJ - should I be investing in a paint thickness meter for my delivery check? I dropped the car off in Nice and no dings or windshield marks ...

When the dealer was showing me my new (silver) car last week, he was showing me how the paint meter worked while telling me that it needed to be the same all around. It, too, was bouncing between 4-7. Made me kinda wonder, but he kinda just shrugged it off.

I believe the amount is $1000.... I think that and police accident reports are the only things that show up.

I've seen the figure 3% of value (invoice, msrp :dunno: )

They will always do this to you, that's why I own my own paint meter and check all cars before I buy or sell one.

I'd have no problem driving an M3 with a few mil thicker paint.
