Jun. 22, 2009 (China Knowledge) - BMW AG's China unit is recalling 1,694 BMW 7-series sedans because of flawed gas pipes, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) said on Friday, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

China's top quality authority said in a statement that the gas pipes in these sedans were made of substandard materials and could become disconnected, causing engine failure.

BMW China will begin repairing these sedans on Jun. 25. The company said it will fix the gas pipes and tanks for free, according to the report.

The affected cars were produced between Jul. 1, 2008 and May 6, 2009.

BMW's car sales in mainland China increased 13.8% year on year to hit 16,580 units in the first quarter of this year.

The automaker has a Chinese joint venture with Brilliance China Automotive Holding Ltd<1114>, namely BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd.

This implies that BMW is making some 7 series in China... that's news to me! I assume these are only for the domestic chinese market? Or are they being exported to other Asian markets as well?

I believe they only make the 3er and 5er. The 7er is built in Dingolfing. http://www.bmw.com*****cn/en/newvehicles/7series/sedan/2008/allfacts/prices/pricelist.html

Interesting... so this issue exists on all 7s?

The administration stated on its website that gas pipes in these cars could be disconnected due to substandard production materials, which could lead to engine failure.

BMW will replace the oil tanks and repair tank hoses for the recalled cars.
