Guys, please cool me down...
Well, Today I worked on the E36 for the tranny swap and I was at bare tranny. There are nine bolts and we got 8 of the bolts out (they are torx screws ). So after we took 8 of the bolts out, we thought we were done and tried to drop the sucker out. Well it wouldnt budge and we were wondering why. We came back to my house to see the holes on my spare motor to see the layout and we noticed there was one more bolt from the starter motor. Ok, we said no problem and went to go look for it. And sure enough, we found that bolt. We brang it the right size torx socket and extention, and put it on the braker bar. Well the bolt was at a 90 degree angle while we could only put the extention bar in a 80-85 degree angle. We tried to loosen and we felt the SNAP!!! Thats what happened to all the bolts so we thought it was cool and we both shouted "hell yea". Well we brang in the ratchet to screw it out and it was still tight as fcuk. Ok, no problem, maybe it didnt loosen enough to break the seal. We tried it again and heard another snap. We were convinced it was loose now. We brang in the ratchet and same thing happened. We looked at the torx and noticed the teeth a bit fcuked up . Ok, so before we continued to keep doing that, we brang a size smaller socket and hammered that sucker in and it was in there firm. Tried it and same thing happened :bawling:. In the end, we called it quits and determined it was stripped :(. It was the bolt way on top and it was our last bolt. That POS would've been out if it wasnt for that bolt. So, I called around and got advises like torching it and getting it soft, or to drill it out with a kit. I think I might just take it to a tranny shop tomorrow so they can deal wit it. I am about to give that sh!t away cuz im so frustrating with it. Everything was going smooth until then. I spent all today getting two bolts out.
Plz make me feel better...

Calm down. It's OK.
The literal SAME EXACT thing happened to me a month ago and I managed to beat it. (took me 2 days)
Call me tomorrow, I'll tell you what to do. DO NOT mess with it any more until you talk to me.
PS- Bro, you have my cell number. Why is this thread the first I'm hearing about this f*ck-bolt?

Well, I was more concerned with people locally so I can move the car somewhere, but I didnt really think of asking peaps from on here. I asked Mike from here though (Progress), he gave me some good advice. Id have never thought you went through the same situation. That gives me some relief. Ill be sure to call you up tomorrow. Im normally up by 8 to work on the car, but when its 8 here, I think its 10 there. Right?

You'll also need a can of PB Blaster, a 3lb short-hammer sledge and a 1/4" impact with an 8" extension.

Ok, well here's what I have right now. A can of WD40 (idk if they do the same sh!t), a reg hammer, a 3/8" breaker bar, and a 2ft extention. Ill have to get everything on that list I guess. Whatev, its cheaper than a shop doing it.

WD40 might do it, but PB is undoubtedly better. It's $4 a can at AutoZone. The regular hammer might work, but a 3lb sledge would be better (you'll understand when you're under there) You can pick one up for about $7 at Wal Mart, and there's just no way around the impact, you have to get an impact to your house or get your car to an impact.
I used a BIG MFing electric impact, and although it worked I highly highly recommend going somewhere that has a pneumatic impact gun and an air compressor.

Sh!t, I got someone who has an air compressor, but he bailed on me and I dont feel like asking him to help anymore (you're prolly reading this http://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss178/cmy_bimmer/1shifty.gif). Ill have to find someone else who has one. But ill just pick up those other tools tomorrow early morning. Is an 8" extention long enough? I thought the 2ft was still short, the damn auto tranny is freakin huge.

I'm not sure if you can get one in there, but an impact wrench/gun would work as well. Phillip you mentioned impact earlier, not sure if this is what you are reffering to, but I use these from time to time at work on marine engines, they rock.
Don't trip to hard mayn, you'll get it out, just never force anything.

Well, as long as I have a long enough extention, it should be good. I wish I had a 3' extention, but rather I have a 2' extention. I just added one more 3" extention and its enough to add a breaker bar. Ill try the impact wrench (air compressed ) tomorrow. I had no luck today, I tried my luck with the breaker bar but nothing happened. I didnt want to make it worse than it really was. The impact is my last resort. Ill spray the hell out of that bolt with the PB blaster tomorrow morning and work on it in the evening. The biggest bummer with this is that one damn bolt is pulling me back three days!!!

Good luck. And I know the feeling. That motherf*cker of a bolt I posted a pic of turned a 4 hour clutch job into a magical 3 day quest around Atlanta looking for various tools that only Chuck Norris knows how to use. I'm getting that mofo framed (which is why I still have it)

I still need to buy that tool you posted.
BTW, When I went to take off the flywheel from the motor I picked up, I noticed how much of a b!tch those bolts were too. Hopefully they come out nicely.

I wasn't doing it alone. It was me and my friend Dom who has probably done 100 E30/E36 clutch jobs/tranny swaps. Plus we had all the tools we could want and an impact yadda yadda yadda...
It would take me a weekend by myself.

Yea, if I had all the tools, that would be another story. It would take me 30 mins just to get the car in the air. Next time I do a clutch job, ill def use a lift and air tools :D. And, that should be pretty close too, cuz I'm using the previous clutch and flywheel.

You dont need a lift. A good set of 4 jack stands is all you need.

Need, I do not. Having a lift would be soooo much nicer. Who would disagree? You get less dirty and safe a lot of energy and time.

Ok, now im missing the feeling of driving my car. For the past week, ive been driving the civic and im car sick. The handling sucks and it has no radio (broken). The ONLY thing I enjoy of it is the 5-speed tranny and the Magnaflow (which I bought (car is my sisters)) muffler. I love the sound of it. Other than that im car sick, and I cant wait till my project is done, if it ever will be. I got bored and took some pics of how it is right now. Its not looking very presentable, but what do you expect when there is no storage nearby :dunno:

he is almost done....hes trying to figure out the wiring for the clutch ignition jumbo...which will be a pain in the ass for him when he DOESN'T NEED TO WIRE IT...but whatever floats his boat
did you try using a pry bar to see if you could still dismount the tranny?
cmy_bimmer
06-23-2009, 10:40 PM
Yea, even i dont understand why he would want to rewire it all. That would be harder than the actual project itself. almost all cars need the clutch in to start the car. I know im not rewiring it...
You mean to just snap the bolt? I dont know if I would want to do that. I tried to pry it a little on the bottom of the tranny when I thought all the bolts were out, but it wasnt budging.
PHARMDVIPER
06-23-2009, 10:48 PM
why not? it won't hurt anything...thats what I would have done....pry that thing off
cmy_bimmer
06-23-2009, 10:54 PM
hmm..... tempting. It wont make a dip in the rear of the motor, will it? That would save me some money for tools. and would I have to use the bolt extractor where I drill a hole in the screw and use an inversed screw bit to screw it out? That would also be easier because it would be exposed. Hopefully it would be fine prying that sucker off, it would also relieve some of my stress :D

At least I moved her closer to my house rather than across town. The car couldnt clear the slope so he had to throw on some boards. FINALLY, now I can work in peace without pressure or a deadline.

UPDATE: I brought (:AF330i:) the biggest, baddest, beefiest air compressor I found (5.5 hp, 30 gallons, 125 psi by Craftsman, $899 compressor!!!) and my friend has a pricey MAG impact wrench. Well I bought that stripped bolt socket kit from home depot and it bit the bolt nicely (thx Philip ). Ok, at this point I figured that the bolt would just screw out smoothly but that a$$hole of a bolt just sat there laughing at me. My next idea is to take off the intake manifold and cut the bolt right off. Then ill screw through the bolt and take it out by a reverse bolt extractor. The car is begging to be worked on I guess. At this point, ill do anything to get that bolt off.

Ok, finally got on Gods good side to help me out today :D I tried the breaker bar one final time before we get into the headache of grinding the bolt down. I gave it one more shot and low and behold, the sucker gave out. That snapping sound was all I needed to make my day happy :D. A couple days a go, I saturated the bolt down with some rost off. I guess from that, the bolt was a lil easier to come out. I also took off the intake manifold so I can access it a lot easier. one of our smaller extentions bent out of shape, so we just used the single 2' extention bar and put in the breaker bar from the gear shifter hole. After the bolt was loose, we dropped the tranny, and started on the torque converter. After that, the flywheel was out and was down to the RMS. Took that out and replaced it. Thankfully, everything went nicely. Tomorrow im planning on having the 5-speed slapped in (hopefully). Just giving you an update. Here are some pics to enjoy and see what torture I went through :AF330i:

I just came back from finishing up my work for the day. I picked up an allignment tool for the clutch and we put in the pilot bearing before any of that. Then we slapped on the flywheel and the clutch cover plate. After that we slapped on the tranny. So, tranny is in there (and the throw out bearing BETTER be in right) and if I work my a$$ off tomorrow, I may be able to start her up. If not, Thursday is planned.

lol, we'll find out after we try to start the car. Everything better work right... tomorrow im torqueing the tranny down, then hooking up the clutch pedal to the tranny. And then the pedal to the master cylinder. The intake manifold has to come together, and the whole motor assembled. Then the gear shifter assembly, and putting together the drive shaft. Then the muffler has to go together.
After all the assembly, I have to top out all the fluids that spilled and leaked. If I really work hard enough and early enough I should have it done
