Noob question about transmissions

Hey guys, this might seem like a noob question but... What's the difference between SMG manual and an automatic transmission in the steptronic mode?... I know the SMG comes
With paddle shifters, but is that the only difference?...

SMG = Manual transmission with an electronic controlled clutch

Steptronic = Automatic transmission with a torque converter, no clutch, etc

Paddle shifters were a no cost option on the auto trans Steptronic for 2008 650i.

But the essential ability to shift between gears without applying a clutch is the same right? Both have 6 gears... does one have a faster track time than the other?... does one really shift faster than the other?... It just doesnt make sense that a company would put the money and effort to offer a 3rd type of transmission that essentially does the same thing already available. Just my opinion...
