I thought you all might be interested in this info since many of us compare the 7 to the S. MB will be raising the base price approx. 2.5% from $89,350 to $91,600 on the 2010 S550. Interesting that the S400 Hybrid will be less, as many expected it to be priced slightly higher than the S550.

Base MSRP (all available in August)

S400 HYBRID: $87,950
S550: $91,600
S550 4MATIC: $94,600
S600: $149,700
S63AMG: $133,550
S65 AMG: $201,150

I took a long time to compare these two vehicles and ultimately decided on a 7. I'm extremely happy with my decision. :D

Here is some more useful info:

Notice that the S550 comes standard with a lot more items than the 7:

600-watt surround-sound system (req. Premium Sound Package on a 7)
In-dash 6-disc DVD/CD changer (req. Premium Sound Package on a 7)
In-dash SD memory card reader (not available on a 7)
Media interface iPod integration (req. Premium Sound Package on a 7)
Zagat Survey® ratings guide for restaurant, golf, and hotels in Nav. (not available on a 7)
Attention Assist driver drowsiness monitor (not available on a 7)
Adaptive Highbeam Assist (req. Driver Assistance Package on a 7)
Automatic trunkgate operation (req. Convenience Package on a 7)
Soft close automatic doors (req. Convenience Package on a 7)
Front ventilated seats (req. Luxury Seating Package on a 7)

The 7 comes standard with the following, which a S550 does not:

Auto-hold brake (not available on a S550)
Premium nappa leather upholstery (req. Premium Leather Option on a S550)
Keyless Start/Stop (req. Premium 2 Package on a S550)
Park Distance Control (req. Premium 2 Package on a S550)
BMW Ultimate Service (not available on a S550)
Options available on an S550 not available on a 7:

Panorama Sunroof
Options available on a 7 not available on a S550:

Integral Active Steering

Head-up Display
Ceramic Controls
Massaging rear seat

7 series for sure. BMW kills it in technology. S class might have a better sound system, but big deal. S class costs like what, 10 grand more when you add up specific options. S class though I heard has a smoother ride than BMW. Their major knock on BMW is the iDrive system, which isn't even that confusing if you have half a brain (people who can afford these cars should already have half a brain) And the new BMW Individual package with the trims and interior and paints is extremely impressive.

P.S. the S class does have LEDs both front and back (kinda imitating Audi with the front ones, but still Audi's LEDs are miles ahead of it) which is nice

The hybrid, though, I must say, looks very interesting. While I would never have bought a hybrid before, with the horrible looks of the Prius and Insight (along with the reputation that their drivers get), a 7 series hybrid would for instance be amazing. I saw on a show that they had Adam Carolla drive from Beverly Hills to Santa Barbera (100 miles) on 2 gallons of gas, and he had plenty to spare.

Hybrids have this cool thing where you can hit the pedal feed the car some gas and get a speed boost, then let go of the pedal and let the electric motors take over, using no gas to power your car (only the initial boost that gets the motors running and once they're running, they require no gas to keep running).

Us Bimmer freaks might not be blamed for global warming one day.

BMW kills it in technology.

I think "kills it" is a little much. Heads-up display and Integral Active Steering are the major differences. Wait for the new S in 3 years... it will be set new standards in nearly every way.

thats S class might have a better sound system, but big deal.

Actually they are almost identical, but you have to pay for it on the 7.

S class though I heard has a smoother ride than BMW.

Maybe too smooth. I like the ability on the 7 to change the comfort/sport setting to your mood.

Their major knock on BMW is the iDrive system, which isn't even that confusing if you have half a brain (people who can afford these cars should already have half a brain)

The F01/F02 is iDrive done right. The previous system was universally criticized. I think the current iDrive is much better than the current MB COMAND system.

And the new BMW Individual package with the trims and interior and paints is extremely impressive.

MB has "Designo" which is the same concept with high quality materials and finishes. Its currently not offered on the S, but has been in the past and likely will be next year again.

The Mercedes has always been a fine super sedan, but I have noticed a slip in their quality over the last few years and don't see them digging out anytime soon.

I think the S-Class looks great, but it drives like a boat.

Residuals posted are for 15K miles/year. Add 2% to Residual for 12k mi/yr and 3% for 10k mi/yr on all terms.

Looks like the S550 36mo. residual will be 49% for 12k miles/year.

These MFs are sky-high .00395 (9.48%) vs the new 7 MF at .0009 (2.16%) while the residual is only 2% better on the S... not to mention the current $3k incentive.

The Mercedes has always been a fine super sedan, but I have noticed a slip in their quality over the last few years and don't see them digging out anytime soon.

Mercedes quality started slipping after purchasing chrysler and then putting some mercedes stuff in chrysler products (the seat control on the chrysler pacifica...just to cite one example). Also, i think mercedes should start being the leader again or at par with BMW instead of being the follower. BMW iDrive...Mercedes follows with COMMAND system. BMW E65 with pull out phone pad...Mercedes S Class follows with pop-up phone pad. BMW E65 move the shift lever next to the steering column...Mercedes S Class follow suit. Lastly, BMW E65 has two front drawers...Mercedes S class follows with 2 drawers.

I gurantee you all the technology in the new F01/02 will be offered (duplicated) in the next generation of S Class now that Karim Habib has cross-over to Mercedes-Benz to lead their advanced design studio. Looking at what Karim did with the BMW CS i can only envision the similarities that will be in the next generation S Class. I'm anxiously waiting.

Mercedes should do a better job of keeping the Maybach and the S Class separate just like BMW does with the Rolls Royce Phantom. A Maybach shouldn't feel or look like a bigger and luxurious S Class.

On a side note, i'm glad Tom Purves was chosen to head Rolls Royce. He did a wonderful job heading BMWNA and i know he'll do the same if not better with RR.
