On another message I frequent - there is a lot of discussion about the pricing within the segment.

In particular, how Mercedes and Jaguar have priced their competitors to the BMW 5 Series. The following is in Canadian Numbers

2010 BMW 550i
$80,400 with M Package
360 HP, 360 lb torque

2010 Jaguar XF Premium Luxury
$73,000 with updated stereo and heat/cool seat package
385 HP, 380 lb torque

2010 Mercedes E-Class E550 4MATIC
$78,000 with Premium Package
382 HP, 391 lb Torque

BMW is $2,000 more than Mercedes and $7,000 more than the Jag XF.

The M5 is $115,000
Jaguar XFR is $83,500

$31,500 Price Difference

Of course the E-Class AMG is about $120K Cdn.

Which leads to the question; will the 2011 see a continuation of BMW's higher pricing or will they become more price competitive?

I just had to double check on bmw.ca and jaguar.ca

M5
Base $111,440

Executive Package, $6,600

Includes: Manual Side Sunshades, Electric Rear Sunshade, M Multi-Function Seat (Includes Lumbar Support), Active Seat Bolsters, Heated Seats Rear, Head-Up Display, (Includes M Display. Replaces Green Stripe Windshield).

Audiophile Sound Package, $1,500
Includes: SIRIUS Satellite Radio Tuner w/1 year Free Subscription, USB Audio Integration, (Y-cable for iPod), BMW Individual Audio System w/Dirac Live.

Total: $119,500

Jag XFR

Options
Adaptive Cruise Control $3,200
Heated Windscreen $300.00

Total Price: $88,800

$30,700 DIFFERENCE

Nothing is like a BMW but I am very interested in seeing how they price the entire 5 Series line up.

Nothing is like a BMW.

You've stumbled upon your answer.

There are substantial differences among the cars you mention. It's a bit of apples vs. oranges. In my view, the cars are about as different as the prices reflect. Then add in the numbers produced, the ease with which they sell, extended maintenance . . . and you realize that you can't just compare engine displacement and horsepower when comparing prices.

Funny thing....I remember how not too long ago, the C-Class used to be priced a good $3 or $4K higher than a comparably equpped 3 Series. Now MB slashes their price to BELOW a comparable E90. Looks like the market has finally caught up...

I could buy at that the 535i and maybe even the 550i level. But at the M5 vs. XFR level - no. $30K difference is quite large.

Jaguar will never have the volumes of a Bimmer or Benz - but are making smart in their pricing strategy.

It will be interesting to see the F10 pricing model. I mean, i could do a lot with $7K and even more with $30K!

For what it's worth, I recall reading somewhere that the E60 was relatively expensive to produce, and BMW decided to design the F10 to be cheaper. For example, the E60 has a good bit of aluminum in the frame, but my understanding is that the F10 will not. Could be rumor. We'll see when it comes out.

Not quite a rumor...they are using a new process which presses steel @ high temperature, but I'm not sure
if this will be less expensive in the end:

this is a funny comparison to me...

When you buy a Jaguar, its the last Jaguar you will ever buy.
When you buy a BMW, its the last brand of car you will ever buy.

As for Mercedes, well my parents drive Mercedes (and Im 34... its been this way for 13 years, since I bought my first BMW, on my own).

Plain and simple BMWs are about the driving... to me Mercedes doesnt get even near a BMW until you buy AMG or go to a S550.

Crossing my fingers for Frankfurt Auto Show announcements on F10 and availability....

Watch, the normal 5 series will be cheap compared to the E Class and the Jaguar, but BMW likes to rocket the ///M Prices....

Markets change - so we'll see how BMW reacts with the E, XF and new A6.

Man, its a competitive marketplace now!
