Why the 4? Speaking of 4.. has there ever been a 4 series?

4-door M3. Existing in the E36 series, but not E46.

Mike is correct. There are a few short form abbreviations to differentiate the M3 body styles: M3/2, M3/4 and M3C.

Also, no there has NOT been a 4-series but look for the 3-series coupe to be renamed the 4-series in the next few years. I'm not sure if BMW will wait for the next generation 3-series (E93) for this change or if they'll do it in a year or two. But just like the 5 and 6-series are the sedan and coupe of the same platform, the 3 and 4-series will be the sedan and coupe references for the smaller platform. And look for the same rule to apply to a 1 and 2-series that'll be out in a year or two.

So the '98 M3/4 was/is the last produced M3 Sedan?

YES. Which is why those of us who ditched E46 sedans own '98 M3/4s. They are the newest available.
