There is local CCA member that contacted me about my 01 330Ci. She is the owner of the same model and model year. She is apparently burning a quart oil every 5,000 miles and is not happy. She currently has 42,XXX miles and changes her oil every 7,500 miles.

I, myself have never noticed a problem with my car, but I also change my oil evey 3,000-3,500 miles.

If she drives it hard I wouldn't be surprised. My car burns at about the same rate.

My car burned about 2.5 quarts so far. I had 16k miles on the car, and two oil changes. I drive it pretty hard.

I don't know how hard she drives the car. She did mention she drives 40 miles to and from work everyday.

Yes, I have had to add a quart every 5-6,000 miles so far (16k miles, 2 oil changes at 6 months and one year)

This doesn't sound out of the ordinary to me either. :dunno:

I agree. She is looking for BMW NA to do something, mentioned something about a new engine. :tsk:

They'll tell her its normal even if it burns 1 quart/1000 miles. While I don't think any new engine should be losing oil (even over 5-6k), this is not as bad as other 330 owners oil loss stories. For some reason, oil loss seems to be more prevalent on the 3.0s than on the 2.5s. Dunno why.

Is she the original owner? Improper break-in will lead to high oil consumption during the life of the engine apparently (rings don't seat correctly)

FWIW, never burned a drop with my 330ci 2001. Well, maybe a drop, but it was never detectable on the dipstick.

Nothing to worry about. How's 'bout a quart a week (approx 300 miles) :yikes: . That is what my old car (a Toyota Celica) was doing towards it's end-of-life. To be fair to it, after the first 8-9 years I didn't take such good care of it, but it did finally last 15+ years and had over 160K miles. Except for the oil consumption it still ran nicely until the power steering linkage got mangled.

I, myself have never noticed a problem with my car, but I also change my oil evey 3,000-3,500 miles.

I've got 21k+ miles on mine now, have changed the oil at 5K, 10K, 15K, and 21K (this past weekend) using stock BMW 5W30, and have yet to notice any significant drop in the level between changes. My schedule from now on is to split the standard intervals in half (eg. every 7500 miles give or take).

Ya, my 2001 330i has been burning a bit...1/2 qt every 5-6k miles. Not alarming yet.

However, for the first 10k or so, it didn't burn any.

My car hasn't burned any oil in the first 5k mi. I changed the oil at 1100. Of course, I was a complete nut about breaking it in since I plan on keeping it for over 10 years.

A quart every 5000 miles? Sounds pretty normal to me. :dunno:
