Ok, given it's pronounced al-pee-na should I assume bimmer is actually pronounced bee-mer?

Al-pee-na just sounds :eeps:, but if it's right I'll say it.

I once asked a group of autocrossers how to pronounce "Azenis" (I had been saying A-zee-knees). They told me to pronounce it to rhyme with "penis." I am unable to forget that, now.

Now, how to spell Beemer/Beamer? I learned it as Beamer, but was :rolleyes: at in some circles when I spelled it that way...

I took advantage of the One Free Adjustment we have while user control is temporarily unworking.

Al-Pee-Nah

;)

Not sure how a native english-speaker would pronounce Alex's transliteration, but shouldn't it be

Ul-pee-nah

Anyways, for those who want to hear an almost correct pronounciation (still sounds somewhat foreign to me) - please go to this website:

http://www.research.att.com/projects/tts/demo.html

Select Klara ... German as voice and type in this text (wrong spelling on purpose; a full sentence sounds more natural IMHO):

Aalpiina ist nicht BMW.

Click on 'SPEAK' and download the .wav-file. Play it on Media-Player / Winamp etc. :D

I know its bimmer- but I always say beemer-- just cause I think bimmer sounds stupid. "bimmer" makes me think of a valley girl accent "I have like a rully, rully nice bimmer"

Al-Pee-Nah

as an aside: Alex, how well do "xi" equipped BMWs sell on the Continent?

probably not even close to how they sell in the US, huh?

very very few. In all these years of BMW ownership, I have seen maybe 5 or 6 'xi's.

I've discovered that it helps to see how it's pronounced in Japanese.

Bilstein = Bi-Lu-Shu-Taeen (it's not 'bil-steen,' if it was it'd be spelled Bilstien)
Alpina = A-Lu-Pee-Nah

The tough one was:

Hartge = Ha-Ru-To-Geh

Aha. BRITISH ENGLISH POLICE ALERT!

The car is Beamer if you are in the UK (and, I heard, Oz and NZ and places). Always has been, always will be - same goes for the motorbikes. No-one knows what a "Bimmer" is :).

With all due respect to Japanese folk whose English pronunciation is worlds better than my Japanese pronunciation, wouldn't it be "ah-ru-pee-na"?

Considering there's no distinction between "L" and "R" to begin with, I don't think it makes any difference. :)

I really don't know how it is pronounced. Is it "HAR-MON"?... I'm really tempted to say "HAM-AND"... like in Ham & Cheese.. :rofl:
