I am trying to read the cel code. I am turning the ignition on and stompping the gas pedal to the floor 5 times in 5 seconds but no flash from the cel.

Is there a right way to do this or a reset that i can do to make the on-board diagnostics work.

Please help i need to get the code enigine has a very rough idle.

Turn the key on to ignition. Where all the lights come on right?

Once there apply and release the pedal 5 times within the 5 seconds......should start working.

tryed to push down to the button tryed pressing the button i did it 5 time in 5 seconds too many times but still will not work. maybe its a code that will only read thru the scan tool is that possible. i dont know i cant get it to flash i dont know what else to try besides takeing it to someone to scan it or buy the scanner.

what year is the car? as i understand it this function only applies to earlier e34. i think only thru 1991 or 1992. after that the code scan tool is needed.

1994 540i and some one else replied with a 1995 525i and it works on his so i dont think thats true that it only work thru 91-92 but thanks anyway.

1994? well first off stop on the peddle 5 or 4 times/ and dont wait 5 seconds in between just back to back. and a 1994 should have a round scantool plug in under the hood and then if i remember right it should have a OBD2 not sure tho but if yours does then you should beable to go to any reliable shop and have to codes pulled up

OBD II did not come out until 1996, some domestic '95 cars had it but not BMW. The pedal stomp test is stepping on the pedal 5 times in 5 seconds.

It's called the "pedal trick" because it really is a trick to get it right. I still don't get it every time, either. You have to do it quickly, but not TOO quickly. And yes, it will work on a 94. Keep trying.
