View Full Version : Back from Frankfurt

I'm back from Frankfurt :)

Left Cologne at 7 o'clock and arrived Frankfurt around 8:30. Around 6-7 km before entering the city we have run into the first major traffic jam. (today was the first day for guests) Instead of following the majority to the parking lot which was organized normally for the visitors, I have shot through the middle and drove directly to the Exhibition center. Just before the entrance, I turned into a side street and found a park spot just a few meters near the main entrance

It was around 9:00 as we have entered the first hall. First of all, we didn't intend to see every single manufacturer (it's almost impossible to be able to see everything on a single day. It's a HUGE exhibition, no joke). So we arrived Alpina stand first. As usual, Alpina had secured it's stand and they were letting only 3-4 guests in at one time. We were greeted by Mr Weber (Sales Manager), chatted with him about half an hour or so over a cup of coffee. They had 2 B7 (one was sold to the owner of Nicole Japan, Alpina Importer in Japan), 1 B3S Cabriolet, 1 B3 Touring and 1 Roadster S. Funny Roadster S was red and not Alpina Blue. I have the catalog and beautiful pictures, which I will scan later. After spending an hour or so we wished Mr Weber well and left Alpina.

The next stop was BMW. I must admit that BMW Pavillion was one of the most crowded one. BMW, along with DC and VAG were the only manufacturers which had their own separate halls. Since we have already seen most of the pics, I only took photos of a gorgeous white 3.0 CSi with red leather interior.

I have finally seen the 6 series. Not to offend anyone, but I have no single penny to spend on that car, forget it. It may have the most sophisticated engine with every snick-snack, but I almost cried as I saw the rear design.

Other than that they had the new X5 4.8, the X3 and the M3 CSL there. Unfortunately no sign of the 1 Series. Bummer.

The weather was beautiful and the exhibition was way over-crowded. Most of the time it was even impossible to come near to the cars, let alone take pictures.

I also have a few photos of the Mercedes McLaren SLR, CLS (prototoype), Ferrari Enzo, Maserati Quattroporte, Porsche Carrera GT.

Since I'm still on dial-up, I'll post the pictures on Monday, if I get my DSL on Monday.

:)

Wow, I am an hour away from catching the train up there this morning. Hope I can get some pictures. Will have my 3 year old in tow, so hopefully she will cooperate.

Cool, can't wait to see the pics! Was the Alpina Roadster you mentioned the V-8 roadster or the Z4-based roadster?

And we can disagree on some aesthetic points. ;)

It's the Z4 Roadster. Since you mentioned it, they didn't have any Z8 Roadster.

and didn't even recognize you!

I just happened to be in Germany attending to various and sundry locations (Heidelberg, Mannheim, Baumholder, Wuerzburg, Hanau) on a business trip with a colleague, and fortunately we were able to wrap things up on Thursday. We were originally also scheduled to go to SHAPE, Belgium on this gig so we had reservations to depart from Brussels-sprouts Saturday morning. We instead changed to depart from Frankfurt on Saturday morning, and after checking into a 'frugal' hotel in Frankfurt-Offenbach Friday morning had a whole day to kill in F-am Main. Hmmm, let's see. What's there to do in this town today?

We got into the Messe area around 11am, but I didn't get so lucky as Alex and got nailed with the obligatory 8 Euro parking fee. A bus picked us up and took us to the main entrance. We obviously had not purchased tickets prior to the event, so while waiting in line to do so some dude asked me if I wanted to purchase a ticket for 30 E's. I said sure, but my buddy decided to purchase his on the up-and-up, so he forked over 42 E's (ouch!). After thinking about it a while I began wondering about whether Germany had any laws against scalping. But I rolled the dice and came out alright as they allowed me through to the Forum area.

And I can vouch that Alex is correct in that this exhibit is HUGE! There were about 9 Forum's, each the size of a very large conference center, that actually displayed vehicles, as well those that had separate Forum's as Alex explained above.

In searching for the BMW Forum, we came across the Alpina exhibit that the A-man described above. I scarfed up a brochure in English that they were handing out. We then stumbled upon the BMW Forum, and it was definitely wall-to-wall bodies in there. There was the big demo for the 6 series (ho-freakin'-hum if you want my opinion) on the ground floor, and on second level they had the CSL as well as other M3's and also BMW Individual vehicle exhibits.

Stupid me neglected to take any sort of camera on this venture, so I picked up one of those 27 shot disposable types with flash. Hopefully I can get them developed this week and will post them here.

My co-worker wanted to see the Smart Forum, since his bro-out-law worked for Daimler-Chrysler, so we took in both of those exhibits.

Well, to make a short story long, after about 5 hours of walking around and viewing a small portion of four of the forums we had to boogie and prepare to depart for home.

I was grateful for the opportunity to do what will probably be a once-in-a-lifetime type event. It definitely was the highlight of the trip, and for anybody that ever has a chance to attend I recommend it very highly!

Ha ! Why didn't you send me an e-mail ?

I didn't like the Daimler-Chrysler exhibit at all. It was dark, crowded. Also the obligatory route first to upstairs and than downstairs was overkill. The aisles were very narrow too.

How did you like the new Smart Fourfour ? :D

Frankfurt am Main is a fun city. You can check the Hauptwache in the city center, an old police station, now used as a cafe-restaurant. In the side streets around the center there are a lot of restaurant and cafes.

The weather is great today. Enjoy it ! :bigpimp:

Sounds like you had a tolerable good time and we await your pictures of the cars and the brunette too, please! :bigpimp: While I have not seen the new 5er in person, I doubt that I will care for it much for the same reasons. The rear end looks awkward and tacked-on.

Thanks for the report. I'm sure the new BMW's employ the most sophisticated technology and perform great. The looks however ... ... and looks are part of the equation which for some, like me, are the deal killer.

Wow, what a zoo. Just rolled in off the train and am downloading my pictures. Never seen so many people. Sure beats what I thought was a good auto show in Washington, DC. This thing was huge. With a 3-year-old in tow, we made it to Mini, BMW, Smart, Chrysler, Jeep, Honda, Fiat, and a few others. Even did the Lego exhibit. Will post some pictures soon. As Alex said, it was hard to get far enough from many of the cars to get great shots - people would just walk in your way.

Autobahn, have you checked the other police cars ? There was another 5 behind that one, the ones for covert missions.

Oooh, me likes the Alpina Roadster! Nice lip, nice butt.

I talked to a friend today who had been working on the dealer presentations for the new 5 - i.e. the group who presents to the dealer reps and takes them around the driving exercises. He said the new 5 is aboslutely amazing to drive.

Autobahn, that pic of your daughter on the Polizei motorcycle is so cute!

For the living room? ;)

The deck spoiler on the Roadster S is the first spoiler I've seen that looks good on the Z4. I just don't like the wheels that they picked for the V8 and the S... I'd like to see the old-style spoked wheel.

Thanks for the pics!

Well, presumably the numbers will look suspiciously similar to the Alpina B10 V8S / Alpina Roadster, just as the numbers for the 4.6 looked suspiciously similar to those of the Alpina B10 V8...

i.e. 375PS & 510NM, so pretty much on a par with the old S62 M5 engine - slightly less power, slightly more torque

I want one of those engines in my E31 - wonder if I can get one crated...?
