Looks like a 7 (the black one)
I dunno the front of the F10 looks really conservative.. :/ The side looks slab-sided and conservative.. I dunno it's not impressing me much.

I think the black car is a 5GT.
I agree with your assessment - bits and pieces from other current BMW offerings. It's not offensive, pleasing to the eye - but nothing that gets the heart pumping. After the drubbing that BMW got for the E60 and E65, I think they went too conservative. Oh - and I like the styling of my E60 (aside from the headlight flares).

I miss Chris Bangel - yes, yes, the Bangel Butt was awful (noone is perfect), but Chris had a philosophy about each successive design of the cars:
Evolutionary followed by revolutionary. We've had evolutionary in many of the models for too long. I'm waiting to see something truly revolutionary. The Z4 is leaning away from evolutionary, but isn't a "holy crap - is THAT a BMW???" (in a good way).

I agree it looks a like a 5er GT, which is probably the stupidest idea from BMW (and X6 being a close second).
As for the styling, BMW can't please everyone. If it looked like another E60, you know the E39 crowd would have declared the demise of BMW, and vice-versa.
In my eyes, the E92 got it just right: enough flares to get the heart pumping, but not enough to drive more traditional BMW fans leaving the brand.

Are you kidding me? They've smoothed up and made bland that whole front somehow, reminds me of a misshappen accord. I'm glad I didn't wait. The current design's a beast compared to this stuff.

Its a 5. Bmw is going back to the concept of 1 design but diff sizes. On the currents models they change it. Now they going back to the same thing. Terrible 4 bmw. N no dual exhaust so far it makes it even worst. Idk what bmw is doin. It seems like they cant find the right formula! :dunno::thumbdwn:

Many e39 owners were also glad they didn't wait for the e60.
So, history repeats itself. What's new?

E60 when it was design it looked like an advanced e39. But it was a revolution in the car design. Now the f10 looks like a f01. It doesnt resemble the e60.

B-O-R-I-N-G Design. BMW is starting to emulate Japanese car companies with boring design, and lack of design courage. The e60 looks more advanced than the F10.

U r 100% right. BMW is slacking off w a lot of things. Not only the design.

i think subtle design enhancements can dramatically change the overall impression of the car. while this is probably the least swirly wrapped f10 i've seen to date, there can still be some hidden lines under the swirlies that are there.
i'm going to wait to pass judgement... but i agree the car is more on the tame side from what you can see now

I was one of those. I am conservative by nature, so the e39 was right up my alley. We will just have to wait and see how the f10 will look when it is finally unveiled. Can't wait.

Personally, I think it looks fine. I'm still not a fan of the wide mouthed open air dam styling. Looks too much like a goofy cartoon character. But based on what I see so far, the F10 will be on the list of cars I look at when it's that time again. In the mean time, I've really been enjoying my E60

First of all, understand I was never a fan of the E60's exterior styling. Over time, I grew to appreciate the total package but the rear was always a major buster.
The new design has a lower, sportier look to it. I think the beltline crease and roofline sloping to the trunk have a lot to do with that. It give it an allusion of a long hood/short rear deck. (Note the 2 C&D photos show profile and front views only.)
I had an opportunity to play around in the GT at the BMW Championship. Forget the design and concept BUT I suspect that the interior of that gives some strong clues as to what to expect from the F10. Nicely done, with improved aesthetics and materials.
I think BMW's overreacting to criticism of its Bangle designs by producing bland designs like this new 5 er.
To me it looks way too much like a generic sedan - look at the greenhouse and B pillar and ask your self if this car will still excite over 7 long model years.
You want to see BMW build something really striking and beautiful - they mostly got it right with the Z8, and the new Z4 looks better than any of the current BMW's, but this new 5 is a snooze.

I genuinely don't understand people complaining about German car design being conservative. Of course it is, that's what makes it German car design. It's always been conservative.
If someone wants random body flares, weird headlights, and look-at-me ostentatiousness, I'm sure there's an Infinity (or something) out there that fits the bill.

I'm not so sure that German=conservative design. Audi and MB have raised the bar on what to expect with regard to styling/comfort/technology. The E300 and A5/A4 are both well done and each has given me cause to visit their showroom. It's going to be some time before before the 3 series redesign so BMW better get it right on the 5. So far, I like what I've seen.

The problem with BMW before 2002 wasn't that the E39 or the E46 were "too conservative." Two different "conservative" ("classy" might be a better word) designs would have been fine. The problem was that they were just one design. Seriously, you can call me stupid, but I've got photos of them open side by side in front of me right now and I can't tell which is which.
That's my concern. Look at the E92/E93 LCI spyshots. Looks like it's getting the exact same headlights as the F01 and F10.
BMW, if you want to return the 3, 5, and 7 to classy, conservative designs, I'm all for it. But give us three different ones, please, not the same one in three sizes.

Are you people serious?
The new E is perhaps the most conservative MB design in recent memory. Most casual car people (not those like us who troll these boards) didn't even notice that there was a new E.
I think you'll be hard pressed not to notice a difference between the E60 and the F10.

Well lets just hope the F10 doesn't have that rear shoulder crease.

W the last 7,5,3 series Bmw changed their design n each 1 was diff. Now w the new F series they going back to the same design w 3 diff sizes. I hate that. I guess they dont want to spent money on developing new design.

Why is it infamous :dunno:
+1 Classic maybe, not infamous. When the E65 7er 1st broke it was regarded by many loyal Bimmerphiles as infamous :D
I'm finding this gen 5er's design somewhat tame. Who would've thought I'd miss the E60? But at least it made a statement, polarizing as that may have been.

This thread is funny. You could fill a library with the press and customer outcry over the "raucous styling" of the E60. BMW listens and responds with a very attractive (IMO) and more conservative design, and you guys start accusing them of lacking design strength. You truly cannot please all the people all the time.
