Do scaled tires howl (deep sound) under braking?

I'm running OEM Contisportcontacts 19" for my E46 M3. Just did a track event this weekend and the tread is a little bit scaled, kinda like peeling where the rubber gathers like the scrubs of eraser. I know after some miles it will smooth out. However, now I notice this really bassy sound when I break relatively hard from moderate speed. Is this caused by the scaled tires or is it caused by brakes and brake pads? So weird.
