When is everybody in this area going to change into snow tires?

It's getting kinda cold lately, and I was wondering when everybody typically changes. I just got a set of LM-22's with rims, but was wondering how long I could wait.

I don't want to get caught in a dusting and get stuck.

I usually wait until late December.

Are you doing it yourself, or going to a tire shop?

If you're doing it yourself, just change it for the first predicted snow. (I only change when I see snow on the ground. Of course, I switch back to summer tires as soon as the salt is largely gone.)

This Saturday my snows go on.

Snow tires are not just for snow. The compound excels in colder weather. My S-03s summer tires are getting real squirrely now on cold nights and takes a while to get them up to temp. The LM-22s I use in the winter would have no problems.

I am going to switch over this weekend because I really want to break in the new tires (I went with High performance all seasons)before it gets too cold plus like Alee said, the summer tires get much harder and don't handle as well in the colder temps.

I can't promise I'm not going to switch back in a few weeks but that's the advantage of having a house . . . sorry Al :D

You'll probably have bought a few more tires and rims by then. :neener:

gunna change them the weekend after next. 11/1-2

Doug, you swap out . . . don't you have all season tires on your summer wheels ?

Also what do you use for winter ?

Doug, your car is going to be incredible in the snow between the snow tires and the AWD !!!

Definitely post some pics after you mount them . . .

I usually wait until the beginning of December. Being that this year the weather has been kind of crazy, they might go on sooner.

Eastern PA weather is virtually identical, so I might as well reply...

I usually wait until the night before snow is forecast and put them on myself in the garage.

However, this year I have to have my new snow tires mounted on my stock wheels. The Tirerack just delivered my Dunlop Winter Sport M2s to my door yesterday.

I think I'm going to make an appointment with the dealer for early/mid December (I'm going with the dealer to hopefully avoid getting my wheels scratched when they mount the tires - plus I want to try out this thing they call a loaner car...).

PhilH, did you buy from Rosen or Devon Hill? I think I remember Devon Hill for some reason. Anyway, they mounted my LM-22s on the M68s and did a perfect job. Not a scratch, and they wiped off the wheels after they mounted them (no greasy hand prints).

I bought my car from Don Rosen (which is now known as "BMW of the Main Line" - they were bought out by Devon Hill). I've heard only good things about Don Rosen's service department as well.

I got a couple very light scratches from the independent shop I use when I got my high temp brake fluid put in, so I don't want to bring it back to them if I don't have to.

Phil . . .we bought winter tires and we didn't discuss it first

How could you do that to your wheel and tire bud ;)

Don Rosen service is excellent. I've had my car there for a few things (including having the plastic titanium colored mesh grille replaced on my front bumper after a retread incident), and they were very professional. I think they'll do a fine job mounting your snows.

They're probably the only service dept in Philly that you can get an appointment the next day if needed. I could never seem to swing that at Otto's or Devon Hill.

Alan, odd as it may seem, sometimes I can make a decision about wheels and tires on my own. Anyway, why would I ask a guy who buys all seasons for his winter wheels about snow tires? :p ;)

AF

Performance all-seasons, that is. :D

Alan, your advice is what helped me decid to be cheap and see if I can get throught the winter on the ContiTouring all seasons. If I get stuck I'm going to call you to pick me up! But then again, how will you get to me with your performance tires. :D Maybe I'll be picking you up!

Don't worry Matt, I can always take our SUV to come and get you

I'm not sure if your being serious or not but when it's 37 degree's or less, the car will beep to let you know. This will give you a warning that the roads might be icey . . .

It wasn't laying on the road. If it's going to be significant, the night before eveyone in their 4WD plows is out and about. Nada last night. 60's forcast for the next week.

Never slipped a wheel on the ES100's this AM.

Well since the PA people are posting I might as well join in. Mine are going on Halloween morning. From experience I've learned that from Halloween to Tax Day (4/15) you need the snows on here. We had snow flurries today but everything melted when it hit the ground. Temps in the 20's tonight. I will take some pics of the new Hakka 2's this weekend to post. They look very very nasty.

I don't know what to do :dunno:
I'm thinking of just using my summers.
I have a beater so I'll use that if there's a threat of any precipitation
That way I'll use the money I would have otherwise used on tires on mods :D
I don't really drive aggressively so hopefully I won't need snows :)

I briefly considered the beater idea, but I ruled it out because as far as safety went, no other car I could get for the money at the time had as much passive and active safety features. Additionally, no other car I could get was as confidence inspiring.

Careful with summers. As the weather gets colder, your summers are already giving away a lot of traction -- the compound is not designed for cold weather, dry or not.

Somebody said the same thing to me too.
How cold do you suppose i could use my summers till?
30? 35? 40?
Damn I really wanted to hold off on the snow/rim decision

I find that when the temperature is in the mid-30s, the summer tires really lose their traction. I think you will be very impressed by the modern snow tire -- they have really come a long way.

For the record ... I swapped over a couple of days ago and went with a high performance all-season . . . I'll be posting some impressions of the Contiextreme later on . . . gotta tell you though, the tread of this tire looks like a winter tire.

You can use summers in very cold temperatures, just remember that they start gripping like econotires. When it gets below freezing, S-03s are great for drifting.

The xi has all season tires standard, even with the sport package...

http://www.bmwusa.com/BMW2003/Templates/Vehicles/Series/Model/ModelFeatures.aspx?dNav_loc=_root.c3.c325xisedan.f eatures&NRMODE=Published&NRORIGINALURL=%2fvehicles%2f3%2f325xiSedan%2ffeatu res%2ehtm%3fdNav_loc%3d_root%2ec3%2ec325xisedan%2e features&NRNODEGUID=%7b18935CA7-5888-4D7C-B650-2E96032F81E8%7d&NRCACHEHINT=NoModifyGuest

To be sure, look for "M+S" (meaning the tires are rated for mud & snow) somewhere on your tires.

i just bought my car '95 325i so i don't have alot of money to spend on winter tires. is it bad to just switch the rear tires? should i put any weights in my trunk? and what would be a good affordable set of snow tires. thanks alot

Yes, this is definitely not a great idea. Most of the braking and all of the steering is done with the front two tires.

Today's snow tires behave so radically different than conventional all season tires that a vehicle can easily become unstable if you mix the two tire types. Therefore, our company policy for your safety is that we will only sell snow tires in sets of four, as anything less would compromise your safety. Our testing confirms this- you can read the test results at http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/2vs4_01.jsp

. . . and they are broken in quite well . . . :p

Since Phil now has my old setup, my car is being stored for the winter this weekend. I have a '95 Chevy Crapalier that I'm driving as my beater.

If I still had the snows they would probably go on this weekend. The temps are calling for highs in the 30's and lows in the 20's. That's too cold for my S-03's.

Yes, that's what I mean, just driving on them. I always felt that by 500 miles, they are partially broken in and by 1000 miles they have fully broken in.

just changed my tires this past weekend.

AT Italia Flash
Blizzak LM 22's
17"

they feel great, right now, it doesn't feel that much worse than my Pilot's, though on tight turns, I can feel a little more swaying.

The ride is still kinda hard though, I thought the ride would get much softer on 17" 's
