I just returned from attending a BMWCCA club event this evening where the BMWNA M products manager brought a fully loaded pre-production F10 550 along with him for a preview. We were allowed to inspect the car fairly thoroughly with the exception of test driving it. Needless to say, it looks good in the photos but is pretty awesome in person. We E39 owners can now actually pretend that the E60s never existed as the look / feel and proportion / design of the new F10 evokes a quasi E39 stance that makes it seem as though it is the next in evolution from the E39... or at least what should have been in my opinion.

The 550 wasnt badged but was a dark graphite metallic with full extended perforated leather interior in rust. The seat was very comfortable and supporting...much like the sport seats in my current E39 540. The trunk is very spacious and the rear entertainment pkg looked cool...although rear seat leg room was lacking in typical 5 series fashion. This model had buttons for all the new lane change /detection / heads up / night vision stuff which looks cool but not quite yet versed in how it all works or whether I would really want all that on my next car... but requires further research.

Anyway, I was so taken with the car that I did try to bribe the BMWNA guy with my Centurion card to see if I could just drive it home and keep it but unfortunately he couldnt let me have it... oh well, after thinking about it, they will be available in June but I think I want to wait for the M sport package and then get it...

Just thought I would share... sorry no pics...had my blackberry w/out camera. :(

Not quite an evolution of the E39. The F10 has grown too much (size, and more importantly weight) to evoke the same type of driving excitement. I am waiting to test-drive the car as soon as it's available.

My E39 540i weighed 4000lbs and had 282hp and 324 lb ft of torque. The F10 535 weighs around 4100 lbs and has around 305 hp and 305 lb ft of torque. The E39 540i had a 6-speed trans while the F10 535 has an 8-speed. The new 5 link aluminum suspension on the F10 will make it handle better than the E39. So I think the driving experience in the new F10 535 will actually surpass that of the E39 540i. I also had an E39 M5 and I think the F10 550i xDrive I am getting in October will blow away my E39 M5 in every respect for about the same price adjusted for inflation. :)

I have had an E39, E60, and soon a F10. Not having driven the F10, in my opinion the E60 is the great one. It handled fantastic with reasonable cabin space and it's innovative design was widely emulated. The F10 is a variant of the E60.

Not having test driven the new 5, my comments were purely visual as I never adjusted to liking the E60 so now it becomes easier to just pretend that it never existed. Its always going to be a matter of opinion.

I've had two E60's and an E39 and both were pretty special in their own way. I always hated the way the E60 had trouble going straight and from everything I've read the F10 solves all of that and then some.
My lease is up in early September and I probably will wait until a day or two before to order a new one and give them just a little time to get some of the bugs out.
I've thought about doing a two year lease on a 3 series and then get a 550 after they've had some time to tweak it a little.
There are some BMWs Ive liked and some Ive loved but none Ive hated.:)

I thought the F10 550 was just UNDER 4,000 lbs. I know there are various ways to present the official weight of a vehicle, but I understood that, when comparing apples to apples, the F10 is about 100lbs heavier than the E60 (which was about 150lbs. heavier than the E39).

Given the HP increases in successive models, the weight increases do not bother me.

What are you talking about?! The e39 540i weighed 3750 lbs, which was considered heavy! Many enthusiasts went for the lighter I6 models, which weighed less than 3500 lbs.

I guess it depends what you thought was so great about the e39, but I can assure you that 6sp vs 8sp AUTO tranny is not very high on the list for many enthusiasts.

Are you sure the interior was rust? Will that interior color be available in the US? I know BMW has a rust interior as an option in the Individual program. Does anyone know the interior colors for the US market?

Oddly enough in canada we had a preview on the 21st as well... both 535 and 550 were on display. A few people were there to answer questions fully catered w booze it was a party.

In any case i do like the e60... but standing infront of the f10 the rear reminded me of the nissan g35/37 and it is quite large in person...

Inside was very similar to the e60 and overall built quality seemed solid.

I will be test driving one soon so will post details.

I'm so glad you liked that color combo. It's probably the Graphite exterior and the Cinnamon Brown interior, which I have on order to arrive mid june. I was a bit apprehensive about not having seen it yet.

I stand corrected. BMWUSA.com lists the F10 550i as weighing 4,376 lbs. ! (4,343 with a manual tranny). The front/rear distribution is the worst I can recall in a V8 5-series. This vehicle is now just a hundred pounds or so short of a 750i. Disappointing.

On the positive side (if this isn't a BMWUSA typo), MPG for the auto tranny is 17/25 (15/22 manual).
