Whenever I am in the car, I can hear that the Nav DVD disc is running - even when I am not using navigation. It was getting a bit annoying so when I took my car in for service asked them to check it out.

The technical came back and told me later that it's normal. He could hear from all other cars with DVD-based nav system.

Do you guys have the same noise? Why does it run when I am using nav? the motor/laser will die much faster just because this stupid operation??

Never hear mine. Normally have music playing, but I've also had the radio off as well. Only issue I've had is that the Nav keeps dropping the disc. SM finally saw the problem and had to order me a complete drive from Germany.

I have the same experience as you. I've gotten used to the sound and I believe it to be normal. The DVD is constantly pulling info off the disc in order to display a visual map on the screen. I don't ever recall hearing this noise in other non-bimmer cars that utilize a DVD based NAV system but I guess I never really paid that much attention to really notice.

I hear the noise periodically as well. Whether you display the map or not, the car maintains its current position on the map in case you decide to display the map.

I hear the noise too... definitely never heard the nav disc in my previous M-B or Infiniti's... I agree with Smokey though, the music usually drowns it all out.

I did Infiniti before and never heard any noise when in use or not. But the dvd-drive was under the passenger seat so that could be why...

It's still a bit annoying but I guess I am being picky.

You should be picky.
I expect nothing less than everything to be great with my car.
It's normal IMO.
