On my '07 530i, the shifter can only be engaged with the engine running and foot on the brake pedal. What does one do in an emergency if the engine has stalled and the vehicle needs to be towed or pushed where engaging neutral is required.

Actually, I am aware of the item (1) on page 64 'Unclip the sleeve of the selector lever'. My real question is how do you unclip it without destroying the boot/sleeve. It's not very obvious to me.

Ann, I really appreciate your response and although my 5 series is an '07. I think that the same technique should apply.
