ok, a bit paranoid . . . but ? on the new style weights on wheels

you know how on some new wheels the weights used for balancing are just glued on (al least it looks like it just glued on). any danger of them coming loose when driving?

it looks like anybody could just peel them off or if dirt got underneath the weights would work themselves loose. probably being paranoid, but any info would be informative.

I've wondered about this a tiny bit as well.

When I go to track events, the check list for preparing the cars sometimes has a mention of this. Well, for one event I saw a mention of putting duck/duct tape over those weights just in case they decide to go loose. So...

I blew one off with a pressure washer a month ago. Of course it was a Sunday so no one could balance the wheel...... For what its worth I clean my wheels a few times a week, they get wet and soaked in wheel cleaner a lot. I am impressed with how the stick ons last, of course they are not under much stress since the forces at play seem to help keep them seated rather than knock them off. Every other car I have ever owned needed to have a rebalance and rotation at least once a year. On the other hand my BMW wheels never shimmy and since we dont rotatate they are the origonal weights, might be something for my 50,000 miles service.......

Those weights are on very well . . . I've never had one come off and I would think the chances of one coming off are just the same with the clamped on weights


Recently I had my wife's wheels balanced and one of the clamped on weights was actually coming off, the mechanic tightened but a couple of weeks later it was loose again, finally he just unclamped it and put a new one on.

Nothing is perfect so either type of weight can come off.

Personally I like the sticky ones better, try to pull one off and you'll see that weight is STUCK ON !!

I wouldn't worry about it.

Agree, the adhesive is pretty good on those. I've never thrown a weight with stick on type weights.

forget thrown. I recently had my M2's mounted & balanced, and they used the stickons. While cleaning them up at home, one of the weights just "fell off" :yikes: The weight had half of the foam adhesive on it. The other half probably went with the adjacent weight :tsk: Glad it happend before they got on my car. Took that wheel back and they spun it right then and there...better then new. **crosses fingers**
