The BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe will soon go into production, according to sources close to BMW. Specific details have yet to be revealed and so far, the company hasnít mentioned a launch date.

But when considering the BMW Concept Gran Coupe seen in Beijing, a production car canít be more than two years away. Last April, BMW Gran Coupe debuted at the Beijing Motor Show. When compared to the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept displayed at Frankfurt Auto Show in 2009, the BMW Gran Coupe Concept displayed a design more similar to a production model. These BMW models, like its competitors, are being targeted towards four-door coupe buyers who want an elegant, with a slightly extravagant design, luxurious interior and driving performance.

Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7 also compete under this segment. Gran Coupe has the same Ďbackboneí platform that underpins the current 5-series, 7-series and 5 GT. The car is available with the same blend of six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as those cars, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The BMW Gran Coupe is described as a 4-door coupe type of vehicle with a unique sporty character. The Gran Coupe was created to have the abilities of a GT as well as a sports car. The roof is 100mm lower than the 7 Series models, and its rear quarters are a bit more restricted.

The concept is said to have the essence of brand values and is expected to bring the aspects of BMW design into the future. Itís also expected for these styling cues to appear all over BMW range in the next few years. The sleek Gran Coupe keeps iconic elements like the kidney-grille, Hofmeister kink and a less pronounced shark nose. The European debut of the Gran Coupe Concept will be at the Paris Motor Show this fall.

Looks like a bit of a mixed bag IMO, there's some bits i like (the rear) but the 2nd pic (front angled) makes it (& the nose) look too long and rake-ish, but without the elegant sharknose effect of the old 6 series.
